SPECIES

Ruddy Ground-Dove Columbina talpacoti

Julie A. Hart
Version: 1.0 — Published May 20, 2011

Conservation

The Ruddy Ground-Dove is a common to abundant species throughout its range. The IUCN classifies it as Least Concern because of a large and increasing population size and an extensive range (BirdLife International 2011).

Effects of human activity on populations

In general, this species responds positively to human activity. Two studies that investigated the use of disturbed and undisturbed sites by birds recorded no Ruddy Ground-Doves in undisturbed forested areas, but did record the species in disturbed habitats (Tramer 1974, Hutto 1989). This suggests that the species readily uses human-disturbed areas; however, there is no information on exposure to pollution or collisions with cars or windows.
