Diet and Foraging
Diet
The diet of Saffron-billed Sparrow is not known in much detail. Generally, it consumes fruits, grains, and insects (Short 1975, dos Anjos 2001, Valadão et al. 2006, Ruggera et al. 2014). One study of 14 Saffron-billed Sparrows in northeastern Argentina found that they ate exclusively insects, or a combination of insects and fruit; analysis of the stomach contents showed seeds, fruit pulp, beetles, ants and other unidentifiable bugs (Rougés and Blake 2001). A sample of fecal matter from several individuals contained unidentified beetles and ants during the dry season (Blake and Rougés 1997).
