Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

The Sira Tanager is found in the humid upper elevations of the Cerros del Sira of central Peru. It is known from the west-facing slopes of the northern Sira between 1,300 and 2,220 m (Huánuco Region; Graves and Weske 1987, Mee et al. 2002, Socolar et al. 2013), and from ridges and slopes of the southern Sira between 1,600 and 2,200 m (Ucayali Region; MGH). It presumably occurs in suitable habitat at appropriate elevations throughout the Sira, at least as far south as the Río Unine valley.

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Cloud forest along stream, upper Rio Shaani valley, southern Cerros del Sira, Ucayali, Peru © Glenn F. SeeholzerSira Tanager is found in humid montane scrub and the canopy and edges of humid montane forest (Graves and Weske 1987, Mee et al. 2002). It appears to prefer open habitats such as elfin forest and scrub along ridge crests, short-stature forest on sandy substrates, forest openings along streams, and successional growth on landslides rather than closed forest (Mee et al. 2002, MGH).
