Graves and Weske (1987) suggested a sister relationship between Sira and Black-capped (Tangara heinei) tanagers based on overall similarity. Molecular data indicate Sira, Black-capped, and Green-throated (T. argyrofenges) tanagers form a monophyletic group, but relationships within that group are unclear (Burns et al. 2014). Sira, Black-capped, and Green-throated tanagers, together with Silvery Tanager (T. viridicollis) have been treated as a superspecies (the "black-capped" tanagers; Graves and Weske 1987, Isler and Isler 1999, Burns and Naoki 2004, Burns et al. 2014) and form a monophyletic group sister to the Black-headed Tanager (T. cyanoptera; Burns et al. 2014).
