Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

Call notes of the Silver-throated Tanager are buzzy and insect-like (Skutch 1954, Isler and Isler 1987). Three types of calls are described by Isler and Isler (1999). While foraging and in flight, the Silver-throated Tanager frequently utters a distinctive, harsh, buzzy, flat, moderately-pitched "jjeut," or a high-pitched, insectlike "bzeeet," which is slightly upward-inflected. These notes can be uttered during foraging or in flight (Isler and Isler 1987). In addition, the birds use a high-pitched "tic." Although songs are not described in the literature, recordings of both songs and call notes are available at Macaulay Library and xeno-canto.

Nonvocal Sounds
