Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Slaty-breasted Tinamou is resident from southeastern Mexico south to Costa Rica (eBird data). The distribution is primarily along the Atlantic slope, but it crosses locally to the Pacific slope in northwestern Costa Rica (Griscom 1932, Friedmann et al. 1950, Russell 1964, Monroe 1968, Land 1970, Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995, Martínez-Sánchez and Will 2010).
Slaty-breasted Tinamou occurs in the lowlands, up to 1500 m in Mexico (Howell and Webb 1995) but only to 700 m in Costa Rica (Stiles and Skutch 1989).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Slaty-breasted Tinamou occupies the forest floor in humid lowland evergreen forest and old second growth; it especially prefers sites with a dense understory (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995).
