Occurs from southeastern Mexico south to Belize and Guatemala; intergrades with costaricensis in the Sula Valley, northwestern Honduras (Monroe 1968).
See Detailed Description.

Occurs from Honduras south to northeastern Costa Rica, crossing over to the Pacific slope in northwestern Costa Rica.

Related Species
Monophyly of the genus Crypturellus is well-supported by analyses of both morphological and genetic characters (Bertelli et al 2002, Bertelli and Porzecanski 2004). Within Crypturellus, boucardi is basal to a clade that also includes C. kerriae (Choco Tinamou), C. obsoletus (Brown Tinamou), C. tataupa (Tataupa Tinamou), C. parvirostris (Small-billed Tinamou), C. ptaritepui (Tepui Tinamou), C. cinereus (Cinereous Tinamou), C. berlepschi (Berlepsch’s Tinamou), C. strigulosus (Brazilian Tinamou), C. undulatus (Undulated Tinamou), C. cinammomeus (Thicket Tinamou) and C. transfasciatus (Pale-browed Tinamou) (Bertelli and Porzecanski 2004).
Crypturellus boucardi occasionally hybridizes with Crypturellus cinnamomeus in Honduras (Monroe 1968).
