Priorities for Future Research
Introduction
A comprehensive genetic analysis of birds from South American populations is needed to understand the evolutionary history and genetic structure of Slate-throated Redstart across the continent (see Systematics). Although considerable information on breeding biology and life history traits is available for populations at 10º N latitude, little is known from other parts of the species' broad geographic range (see Breeding and Demography and Populations). Analysis of geographic variation in song, particularly the apparent differences in song between the nominate subspecies miniatus (northern and central Mexico) and populations to the south, should also be a priority for future research (see Sounds and Vocal Behavior). Additional work on the effects of human development on population demography would also be valuable (see Effects of human activity on populations). Molt and its relationship to breeding is also poorly known, and given the importance of the tail in flush-pursuit foraging (see Foraging Behavior), studies of the foraging behavior of birds in rectrix molt would also be of considerable interest (see Molts).
