Geographic Variation

Zenaida graysoni is monotypic.

Subspecies

Related Species

Described as Zenaidura graysoni Lawrence 1871; type locality Socorro Island

Zenaida graysoni is closely related to Zenaida macroura (Mourning Dove); Mayr and Short (1970) considered these to be "possibly" conspecific but most authors recognize graysoni as a species, probably forming a superspecies with macroura (Sibley and Monroe 1990). Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data confirms that graysoni and macroura are sister taxa, and Zenaida auriculata (Eared Dove) is sister to the graysoni+macroura pair (Johnson and Clayton 2000, Johnson and Weckstein 2011). The genus Zenaida in turn is sister to Zentrygon, a genus of quail-doves (Johnson and Weckstein 2011).
