Diet and Foraging

Diet

The diet of Southern Emerald-Toucanet is not described in much detail, but presumably is very similar to that of Northern Emerald-Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus), which has a varied diet, eating a wide variety of fruits as well as terrestrial invertebrates and small vertebrates. Fruit specifically noted as part of the diet are Ficus sp., Cecropia telealba, Prunus sp. and Sourouba sp. (Ridgely and Gaulin 1980). Miller (1963) reported a specimen of Southern Emerald-Toucanet whose stomach contained "clipped vegetable material". Also has been observed attending an army ant swarm (Rios et al. 2008).

Foraging Behavior

The foraging behavior of Southern Emerald-Toucanet has not been described in detail, but primarily gleans in trees and shrubs.
