Introduction

Speckle-chested Piculet is a tiny woodpecker with a tiny geographic range: this species is restricted to a small region of the Andes of northern Peru. The conservation status of this piculet is rated as Vulnerable due to the small range, and threats to the remaining habitat from deforestation of humid montane forests for agriculture, especially for coffee production and for pasture.  Speckle-chested Piculets forage in the midstory and canopy solitarily, in pairs or in small family groups, or as members of mixed species flocks. They are especially fond of areas in the forest with epiphytes and tall second growth. As the name "Speckle-chested" suggests, the breast is black but is heavily speckled with white; the upperparts are brownish gray, and the belly is white, barred with black.
