Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird is occurst from Mexico south to northern Nicaragua (Howell and Webb 1995, Martínez-Sánchez and Will 2010). It occurs north to central Sinaloa and central Veracruz (Friedmann et al. 1950, Rosenberg and Rosenberg 1979, Howell and Webb 1995).
The elevational distribution of Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird is from 750-2500 m, although it occurs, locally and/or seasonally, at lower elevations, to almost sea level (Howell and Webb 1992, 1995).

Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Sparkling-tailed Hummingbird occurs at the edge of humid to semiarid pine-oak forest, in brushy second growth, and scrubby woods, often woods with oaks (Binford 1989, Howell and Webb 1995; see also Davis 1953). Schaldach (1963) described the habitat as "watered arroyos at the upper margin of the Tropical Deciduous Forest and in the lower edge of the Oak Woodland".
