Introduction

Endemic to the island of San Andrés, which lies off the eastern coast of Nicaragua in the Caribbean, but is owned by Colombia, the San Andres Vireo has a tiny range (17 km2) and currently is considered Vulnerable according to IUCN threat criteria. Its plumage is typical of many of the smaller vireos, with the contrasting yellow lores and bold white wingbars being the species’ two most obvious field marks. Although it appears to tolerate some habitat modifications, development for agriculture and an increasing human population on the island are placing this species at risk. Should the Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) successfully colonize San Andrés, then the vireo would be exposed to even greater nest predation risks; Mangrove Cuckoos (Coccyzus minor) and Tropical Mockingbirds (Mimus gilvus) already predate significant numbers of nests.
