Introduction

Short-tailed Field Tyrant is a peculiar, short tailed and long legged flycatcher of the Pacific coast of western South America. Ranging in a narrow coastal strip from Ecuador south to the northern tip of Chile, this species inhabits barren open areas below 1300 m in elevation. The field tyrant is olive brown above with blackish wings marked by thin white wingbars, a white supraloral, a very short black tail with a cinnamon base, pale yellow rump, and whitish underparts. The short tailed appearance of this flycatcher cannot be overstated, and the structure is exaggerated even further by this terrestrial species' long legs. Short-tailed Field Tyrant has a soft, buzzy call that is is repeated as this charming bird runs along the ground in pursuit of insects.
