Introduction

The Stripe-headed Antpitta occurs from northern Peru south to northwestern Bolivia. Principally brown above, the underparts and face are boldly streaked and spotted, and there are some white shaft streaks evident over the mantle in northern populations. The Stripe-headed Antpitta occurs at 3000 to 4600 m, and tolerates heavily disturbed habitats, although it is largely restricted to dry Polylepis and Gynoxys woodlands. It occasionally wanders into surrounding areas of bunch grass. Almost nothing is known concerning the species’ ecology, despite that the Stripe-headed Antpitta is fairly common. Two subspecies are recognized, but it has been suggested that the form G. a. punensis, which occurs in the south of the range, might be better treated as a separate species based on morphological differences and some vocal characters.
