Demography and Populations

Introduction

Flower (1938) wrote that captive Sunbitterns have been reported to live up to 17 years, but there is at least one account of a male Sunbittern in the San Diego zoo who lived to at least 24 years of age (Haye 1989). Birdlife International (2009) estimates that the wild population falls into the considerably large category of 500,000-4,999,999 individuals. No other demographic information available.
