Diet and Foraging

Diet

Feeds on small frogs, crayfish, and crabs (Stiles and Skutch 1989), as well as shrimp "and other smaller crustaceans" (Deignan 1936); tiny fish (Hilty 2003); a variety of insects such as flies (Diptera: Brachycera), beetles (Coleoptera), and dragonflies (Odonata: Coenagrionidae); as well as molluscs (Lyodus parvulus) (Haverschmidt 1968). May travel up to 100 m away from a river to find food when feeding chicks (Lyon and Fogden 1989).
