Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Tacarcuna Chlorospingus is restricted to the Caribbean sector of the Darién highlands of Panamá and Colombia (Stotz et al. 1996). In Panama, it ranges from the eastern part of the Panamá and Colón Provinces (Cerros Azul, Jefe and Bruja), south to the Serranía de San Blas (Cerro Brewster), Serranía de Majé and Cerros Tacarcuna and Malí in the Darién Province (Wetmore et al. 1984, Ridgely and Gwynne 1989, Isler and Isler 1999, Angher and Christian 2000). In Colombia, it is only known from the east slope of Cerro Tacarcuna in department of Chocó (Hilty and Brown 1986, Ruiz-Ovalle and Hurtado-Guerra 2014). This species is distributed between the elevations of 1230-1440 m in the Panamanian slope of Cerro Tacarcuna, although it ranges lower to 1150 m in the Colombian side, and from 840-1000 m in Panamá Province (Wetmore et al. 1984, Renjifo et al. unpublished data).

Distribution outside the Americas

Tacarcuna Chlorospingus is endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Tacarcuna Chlorospingus has been found using all strata of humid montane forests, from the understory to the canopy, and forest edge (Isler and Isler 1999). It has been recorded as common at the elfin forest in foothills and highlands in Darién (Ridgely and Tudor 1989). The species was one of the most common species (4-5 individuals) contributing to mixed species flocks at mid level and subcanopy in cloud forest in Cerro Tacarcuna (Renjifo et al. unpublished data).

Historical changes

No study has monitored population changes in this species. Most data on species’ presence or abundance come from short-term surveys or sporadic sights, which have reported it as uncommon to locally fairly common (Wetmore et al. 1984, Pearman 1993, Angher and Christian 2000), which precludes any inference about the status of its populations.
