Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Tawny-breasted Tinamou is resident in the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela south to central Peru. In Venezuela it is reported only from southern Táchira, at the Páramo de Tamá and in the upper Río Chiquito (Phelps and Phelps 1958, Hilty 2003). Tawny-breasted Tinamou occurs in all three cordilleras in Colombia (Meyer de Schauensee 1948, Hilty and Brown 1986). It occurs south on the west slope of the Andes of Ecuador to Cotopaxi, and along the entire length of the eastern Andes (Chapman 1926, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a). Tawny-breasted Tinamou also occurs in Peru along the east slope of the Andes, from northern Cajamarca south of the Cordillera Vilcabamba in Cuzco (Schulenberg et al. 2010). There are no records between Huánuco and Cuzco, but it is not known whether this represents a true gap in the distribution, or simply reflects lack of recent field work in the region.
The elevational range of Tawny-breasted Tinamou is 2400-2800 m in Venezuela (Hilty 2003), 1700-3100 m in Colombia (Hilty and Brown 1986), 2300-3400 m in Ecuador (but locally down to as low as 2100 m; Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a), and 2500–3000 m in Peru (Schulenberg et al. 2010).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Tawny-breasted Tinamou occurs on the forest floor in humid montane forest and forest edge (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a, Schulenberg et al. 2010).
