Introduction
The Thick-billed Miner is a terrestrial furnariid endemic to the southern Peruvian Andes. Found on western Andean slopes between 600 and 3000 meters in elevation, the species prefers dry, rocky areas with sparse vegetation. A large miner, it has a heavy, decurved bill that is black with a pale-based mandible, dark gray-brown upperparts with a tan eyering and supercilium, pale buff upperparts feather edging, rufous bases to the flight feathers and tail, and buff-white underparts. Inconspicuous as it walks along the ground, Thick-billed Miner is most easily located by its strident, ringing calls and song.
