Geographic Variation
Up to nine subspecies are recognized:
occidentalis, described as Crypturus occidentalis Salvadori 1895; type locality San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico.
Occurs on the Pacific slope of Mexico from Sinaloa south to Guerrero (Blake 1979).
soconuscensis, described as Crypturellus cinnamomeus soconuscensis Brodkorb 1939; type locality Colonia Soconusco, Chiapas, Mexico
Occurs on the Pacific slope of southern Mexico in Oaxaca and Chiapas (Blake 1979).
Differs from nominate cinnamomeus in being somewhat larger and much more deeply colored throughout. Top of head blacker. Hindneck deeper rufous. Upperparts more dusky rufous, less bright and pale. Lower back and rump with blackish wavy bars much narrower, and with the interfasciate area darker brown. Uppertail coverts with the light bars much deeper and more reddish ochraceous. Tail also deeper rufous. Light markings on wings and upperwing coverts much darker and more rufous ochraceous. Superciliary stripe, sides of head, and sides of neck deeper chestnut. Breast deeper cinnamon, especially laterally. Entire posterior underparts, including crissum and thighs, with the light areas pale cinnamon instead of buffy (Brodkorb 1939).
mexicanus, described as Crypturus mexicanus Salvadori 1895; type locality Monte Verde, Tamaulipas, Mexico
Occurs in northeastern Mexico from southern Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí south to northern Veracruz and northern Puebla (Blake 1979).

Related Species
Monophyly of the genus Crypturellus is well-supported by analyses of both morphological and genetic characters (Bertelli et al 2002, Bertelli and Porzecanski 2004). Parker et al. (1995) noted vocal similarities betwen Crypturellus cinnamomeus, Crypturellus transfasciatus (Pale-browed Tinamou), and Crypturellus atrocapillus (Black-capped Tinamou). Phylogenetic analysis of both morphological and genetic characters confirms that transfasciatus and cinnamomeus are sister taxa (Bertelli et al 2002, Bertelli and Porzecanski 2004).
Crypturellus cinnamomeus occasionally hybridizes with Crypturellus boucardi (Slaty-breasted Tinamou) in Honduras (Monroe 1968), although Howell and Webb (1995) suggested that these reported hybrids "appear to pertain to brightly marked C. b. costaricensis".
