Conservation
Conservation Status
The population size has not been estimated, but the Turquoise Tanager has a very extensive geographic distribution, estimated at 7,170,000 km2 (BirdLife International 2009). The relative abundance of the species also has been assessed as fairly common (Parker et al. 1996). In view of the large range and a seemingly stable population, the conservation status of the Turquoise Tanager is assessed as “Least Concern” (Birdlife International 2009).
Effects of human activity on populations
Deforestation and modification of tropical lands into agricultural areas along with other land use changes is changing the habitat in many regions inhabited by the Turquoise Tanager. For the Turquoise Tanager we may actually see an increase in populations, given the ability of this species to occupy second growth, pastures and agricultural areas (Isler and Isler 1999).
