Sounds and Vocal Behavior
Vocalizations
Vermilion Tanager is relatively quiet, with calls described as an occasionally weak “tsit” (Ridgely and Tudor 2009). These calls also may be accelerated into a short flat trill, "chip chip zit-t-t-t-t" (Isler and Isler 1987), which perhaps represents a song (Hilty 2011). An apparently different vocalization also has been suggested as the song, "...a quiet series of slurred high tseet notes and short warbled phrases" (Dan Lane, in Schulenberg et al. 2010), but no available recordings are labeled as songs.
Geographic variation in vocalizations has not been reported.
In comparison to other birds, there does not seem to be a lot of complexity to the Vermilion Tanager’s vocalizations and there are many repeated similar notes (Mason 2012, Mason et al. 2014).
There are few audio recordings of vocalizations of Vermilion Tanager; examples can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.
