Behavior

Introduction

The behavior of Violet-bellied Hummingbird is not described in much detail. This hummingbird usually forages low near the ground (Willis and Eisenmann 1979, Hilty and Brown 1986, Ridgely and Gwynne 1989, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a), although may ascend to the canopy to visit trees are in flower (Schuchmann 1999).

Territoriality

Little information. Males reportedly establish territories at concentrations of flowering plants (Schuchmann 1999).

Sexual Behavior

Little information. Violet-bellied Hummingbird presumably is polygynous, as are most if not all species of hummingbirds (Schuchmann 1999: 509).

Males sing from perches 1-10 m above the ground (Willis and Eisenmann 1979).

Social and interspecific behavior

Violet-bellied Hummingbird primarily is solitary, as is typical of hummingbirds.

Predation

No documented reports of predation on Violet-bellied Hummingbird?
