Diet and Foraging

Diet

Violet-bellied Hummingbird is primarily nectarivorous, but the diet is not known in any detail. This species is reported to visit flowering shrubs and trees, including species of Rubiaceae, Ericaceae, Gesneriaceae (Besleria), and Fabaceae (Inga) (Schuchmann 1999). Violet-bellied Hummingbird also consumes small arthropods (Schuchmann 1999), as do most if not all species of hummingbirds (Remsen et al. 1986).
