Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The song of Violet-bellied Hummingbird is described as an insec- like hiss, vieiei veii veii veii ... (Willis and Eisenmann 1979); as "a thin series of high-pitched trilled prrree notes (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001b); and as "a repeated thin, nasal note: eee-eh" (Lane, in Schulenberg et al. 2010).

For a representative audio recording with sonogram, see audio

The alarm call of Violet-bellied Hummingbird is described as see see zeek (Willis and Eisenmann 1979).

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Violet-bellied Hummingbird can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.

Nonvocal Sounds

None reported; presumably the wings produce a "whirring" sound, audible (as in most hummingbirds) at close range.
