Volcano Junco has a very small geographic range, estimated as occupying only 5300 km2 (BirdLife International 2015). Nonetheless, this species is considered to be fairly common (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Parker et al. 1996), and its population is believed to be stable (BirdLife International 2015). Consequently the IUCN Red List status of Volcano Junco is assessed as Least Concern (BirdLife International 2015).
Effects of human activity on populations
In the short term, human activity probably has little effect on Volcano Junco; it may even benefit, locally, from deforestation that creates more of the open habitats that it occupies (Stiles and Skutch 1989). In the longer term, as a species that has a small geographic range and occupies habitats at very high elevations, it may be vulnerable to habitat loss due to global climate change (e.g., Freeman et al. 2018).
