Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The song of Volcano Junco is "weak and unmusical" (Slud 1964), described as "short, choppy phrases of squeaky, burbling, or buzzy notes: k'cheew, chu k'wee, chip-chip ts'chew tsi'weet, etc." (Stiles and Skutch 1989). Slud (1964) suggests some geographic variation, with the song of the population of the Cordillera Central described as "a somewhat involved set of about 10 notes followed by a variable, strongly undulant trill or warble"; this song apparently has not been audio recorded, and is not mentioned by other authors.

Calls of Volcano Junco include "a high thin, tsee or tsee-tsee; a scolding, clear, or scratchy whew or jeew; a repeated tchup or tchip when excited, and a fast, rhythmical cher-we cher-we cher-we ..." (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Volcano Junco can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.
