Junco vulcani is monotypic.

Described as Zonotrichia vulcani Boucard 1878; type locality Volcano of Irazu, 10,000 ft [3048 m], Costa Rica

Junco vulcani is the basal member of the genus Junco (Klicka et al. 2014, Friis et al. 2016), and is relatively distantly related to other members of the genus (Milá et al. 2007, Friis et al. 2016). Junco is sister to Zonotrichia (Klicka et al. 2014).
