Breeding

Introduction

Breeding occurs from April-August, with a peak in June-July (Rowley 1984, Binford 1989, González-García et al. 2001). Both sexes contribute to nest constructions. The nest is a shallow platform, composed of sticks and lined with dry leaves and bromeliads, and are placed 1-5 m above the ground (Rowley 1984, González-García et al. 2001). Mean nest dimensions are 22 x 6 cm (González-García et al. 2001).

The clutch is 2-3 eggs (Rowley 1984, Binford 1989, González-García et al. 2001). The eggs are off white and unmarked; the mean dimensions of one set (of three eggs) were 66.7 x 45.5 mm (Rowley 1985, González-García et al. 2001). Only the female incubates, but both sexes care of the young after hatching (González-García et al. 2001). The incubation period is 24 days. Nestlings are precocial and can fly in few days. Nestlings have full juvenal feathers in few days and resemble small adults very soon.
