Conservation

West Mexican Chachalaca has a large geographic range, and its IUCN Red List status is evaluated as Least Concern (BirdLife International 2014). This chachalaca also is not considered as a threatened species under Mexican law (SEMARNAT 2010).

The relative abundance of West Mexican Chachalaca is assessed as common (Oaxaca; Binford 1989) and as fairly common to common (range wide; Howell and Webb 1995).

Effects of human activity on populations

West Mexican Chachalacas long has been subjected to hunting for food and for sport, but also apparently can withstand current levels of hunting pressure.

Peterson et al (2001) modeled possible changes to the distribution of West Mexican Chachalaca under scenarios of climate change. The increment in temperature can cause a reduction of its natural habitat between 6 and 38%, depending on the climate change model used.
