Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

West Mexican Chachalaca is endemic to southwestern Mexico, from northern Jalisco south to southwestern Chiapas, and inland to southwestern Puebla (Friedmann et al. 1950, Howell and Webb 1995).

The elevational distribution of West Mexican Chachalaca is from sea level up to 2400 m (Howell and Webb 1995).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to Mexico.

Habitat

West Mexican Chachalaca occurs in decidouous forest, thorn scrub, second growth, and, locally, in pine-oak forest (Schaldach 1963, Binford 1989, Howell and Webb 1995, Parker et al. 1996). Also occurs less commonly in mangroves and in palm plantations (Schaldach 1963).
