Introduction

White-bellied Emerald is a small bicolored hummingbird, green above and white below. This species may recall Azure-crowned Hummingbirds (Amazilia cyanocephala), but White-bellied Emerald is smaller and is all white below. White-bellied Emerald inhabits humid evergreen and semi-deciduous forests, wooded river banks, clearings, and plantations. During the winter, many birds reside near swamps and in semi-deciduous forests. White-bellied Emeralds are quite common in the tropical Caribbean lowlands but much less so at higher elevations or on the Pacific slope. This species feeds and sings at all levels of the forest.
