Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
White-masked Antbird is resident in a restricted area of northern Peru, near the border with Ecuador. The westernmost locality is from an unknown location in the Cordillera Campanquís, on the border between the departments of Amazonas and Loreto (Lane et al. 2006). Most recent records are from the lower Río Morona, where this species was rediscovered in 2001 (Lane et al. 2006). Also occurs on the Río Pastaza, although the only record from this region is the single specimen (holotype) (Berlioz 1938).
White-masked Antbird is restricted to the lowlands; the few known sites are below 300 m.
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
White-masked Antbird primarily occurs in varillal, a stunted forest formation that grows on white sand substrates. Along the lower Río Morona, this varillal has a thick layer of dead leaves and humus on the forest floor, and a relatively even canopy height of 20-30 m (Lane et al. 2006).
