Introduction

Yellow-headed Parrot inhabits tropical deciduous forest and other lowland wooded areas on the Pacific and Atlantic slope of Mexico, as well as locally in Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.  Feral populations also occur in southern California, Florida, and Puerto Rico. This species is considered to be a good "talker". Consequently Yellow-headed Parrot is highly threatened by capture for the pet trade, and is now very scarce in most parts of its native range. This is a large, principally green amazon with varying degrees of yellow on head, nape, chin and neck, and yellow or red on the leading edge of wing; the sexes are similar. Yellow-headed Parrot formerly was considered to be conspecific with Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata) of Central America, and with Yellow-crowned Parrot (Amazona ochrocephala) of western Panama and northern South America; the phylogenetic relationships of these parrots still are not fully resolved.
