Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

Yellow-headed Parrots exhibit a variety of shrieks and whistles. Screams are described as raucous but mellow and include a rolled kyaa-aa-ah and krra-aah-aa-ow, a deep, rolled ahrrr or ahrhrrr, and whoh-oh-ohr, a throaty, rolled rrohrr, as well as human-sounding wow or ow sounds (Howell and Webb 1995, Juniper and Parr 1998). In captivity, Yellow-headed Parrot is considered to be one of the best "talkers", readily mimicking humans and other sounds; this ability has resulting in great demand for Yellow-headed Parrot in the pet trade, contributing to its rarity (see Effects of human activity on populations) (Ridgely 1981, Juniper and Parr 1988).

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Yellow-headed Parrot can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.

Nonvocal Sounds
