- Acalanthe
(Estrildidae; syn. Erythrura Ϯ Red-throated Parrotfinch E. psittacea) French “Acalanthe,” the name given to a parrotfinch by Vieillot 1805 < L. acalanthis small bird mentioned by Virgil, Servius Honoratus and Isidorus Hispalensis, generally thought to be some sort of finch < Gr. ακαλανθις akalanthis small unidentified bird mentioned by Aristophanes and Suidas, doubtless the same as akanthis. In Gr. myth. Acalanthis was one of the Pierides, who, having failed to best the Muses in a singing contest, was transformed into a bird. "XXV. Acalanthe VIEILLOT Ois. chant. p. 56. pl. XXXII. Schnabel ploceus-artig gestreckt, Firste gerade, über doppelt so lang als hoch. Flügel kurz gerundet. Schwanz etwa zwei Drittel so lang als Flügel, fächerförmig, länglich abgerundet. Wuchs dem der vorigen Gattung entgegengesetzt: schlank und zierlich: "taille svelte, une forme élégante". Kleid: Kopf, Bürzel und Schwanz scharlachroth, Leib und Flügel dunkel papageigrün, Schnabel und Beine schwarz. — Neu-Caledonien. 96. A. psittacea (Fring. — L. GM. 903. 41) RCHB.
