ACTITIS

(Scolopacidae; Ϯ Common Sandpiper A. hypoleucos) Gr. ακτιτης aktitēs  coast-dweller  < ακτη aktē, ακτης aktēs  coast; ιζω izō  to sit; "GENUS 113. ACTITIS (ακτιτις , ακτιτης  in littore degens) Tringa Briss. Dumer. Bechst. Meyer. Limosa Briss. Totanus Bechst. Meyer. (Strandläufer Germ.  Bécasseau, Barge Gall.  Sandpiper Angl)  ...   Species: Scolopax Limosa, Totanus, Tringa pugnax, Hypoleucos Lin.   Annot. Quomodo Tringas Auctorum ab illorum Totanis seu Limosis distinguam, non video; characteres ad hunc usum enumerati aut vacillant, aut sibi neutiquam contrarii sunt." (Illiger 1811); “It is true that Illiger united in his genus Actitis both Limosa, Totanus, Tringa, Pavoncella, and the bird of the present genus, but there is no more reason for dropping his name altogether than for disregarding Linnæus’s Tringa, and there are no more reasons for quoting “Actitis BOIE nec ILLIGER” than for Tringa BAIRD nec LIN.”  Illiger (Prod. p. 262) enumerates as species of his genus Actitis: Scolopax Limosa, Totanus, Tringa pugnax, Hypoleucos Lin.”  Of these the first two had already, by earlier writers, been separated as types of Limosa and Totanus, leaving in 1811 Tringa pugnax and hypoleucos the occupants of the restricted genus Actitis.  In 1816, LEACH established the genus Pavoncella for the former of these two species, so that hypoleucos, by elimination, has become the only type of Actitis ILLIG., to the exclusion of Tringoïdes BONAP., 1831, which is a pure synonym of Actitis.” (Stejneger 1885); "Actitis Illiger, Prodromus, 1811, p. 262. Type, by subsequent designation, Tringa hypoleucos Linné. (Stejneger, Bull. U. S. Nat. Mus., no. 29, 1885, p. 131.)" (Peters 1934, II, 269); "We are not certain that Stejneger's designation is a valid one, as it was determined by elimination." (Hellmayr and Conover, 1948, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. I (3), p. 122).
Var. Actitus, Atites.
Synon. Guinetta, Tringoides.
● (Scolopacidae; quasi-syn. Actitis † Spotted Sandpiper A. macularius) “Actitis: Tringa macularia Gm. u. s. w.” (Boie 1826); “Actitis Boie, 1826, Isis von Oken, col. 979.  Type, by monotypy, Tringa macularia Gmelin, i.e. Linnaeus, 1766.” (JAJ 2023).

Heteractitis

(Scolopacidae; syn. Tringa  Grey-tailed Tattler T. brevipes) Gr. ἑτερος heteros different, another; ακτιτης aktitēs  coast-dweller  < ακτη aktē, ακτης aktēs  coast; ιζω izō  to sit; "Heteroscelus Baird, 1858, unfortunately will have to give way for Heteroscelis Latreille, 1825.  As a substitute may be employed  Heteractitis,  from ἑτερος = different, and ακτιτης = an inhabitant of the shore." (Stejneger 1884); "Heteractitis Stejneger, 1884, Auk, I, p. 236.  New name for Heteroscelus Baird, 1858, considered preoccupied by Heteroscelis Latreille, 1825 (Hemiptera)." (JAJ 2021).
