COTURNIX

(Phasianidae; Ϯ Common Quail C. coturnix) L. coturnix, coturnicis  quail; "40e  GENRE. { Caille. Le bec court, en cône-recourbé: les narines ovales, demi-fermées: la langue entière, pointue: point d'espace nud derrière les yeux: les pieds sans éperons.   Coturnix.  Rostrum breve, conico-incurvum: nares ovatæ, semi-tectæ: lingua integra, acuta: area pone oculos nulla: pedes mutici." (Bonnaterre 1791); "Coturnix Bonnaterre, Tabl. Encyc. Méth., Orn., pt. 1, 1791, p. lxxxvii. Type, by tautonymy, "Caille" = Tetrao coturnix Linné." (Peters, 1934, II, p. 91). The Common Quail was formerly an abundant migrant and summer visitor to Europe, but its numbers are now declining (see quelea and quiscula).

Malacoturnix

(Phasianidae; syn. Ophrysia Himalayan Quail O. superciliosa) Gr. μαλακος malakos  soft; L. coturnix, coturnicis  quail; "Mr. E. Blyth, C.M.Z.S., exhibited a skin of a Quail shot near Missouree, new to the fauna of Continental India.  This species had been described and figured in the 'Knowsley Menagerie,' pt. 2, as Rollulus superciliosus; but Mr. Blyth considered that it belonged more strictly to the true Quails, and should be made the type of a new genus proposed to be called Malacoturnix" (Blyth 1867 (October)); "Malacoturnix Blyth, 1867, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, p. 475.  Alternative name for Malacortyx Blyth, 1867." (JAJ 2021) (see Malacortyx).


Zecoturnix

(Phasianidae; syn. Coturnix New Zealand Quail C. novaezelandiae) New Zealand; L. coturnix, coturnicis  quail; "Zecoturnix, gen. nov.   Type Coturnix novæzealandiæ Quoy et Gaimard.  The wing is reduced to almost the same formula as in Ypsilophorus Mathews." (Iredale & Mathews 1926); "Zecoturnix Iredale & Mathews, Bull. Brit. Orn. Club, vol. xlvi. p. 76, Feb. 25th, 1926.  Type (by original designation): Coturnix novaezelandiae Q. & G."
