Grygallus

(Phasianidae; syn. Tetrao Great Capercaillie T. urogallus) Gessner 1555, used the terms "Grygallus major" and "Grygallus minor" for the hen Great Capercaillie and hen Black Grouse respectively, thinking them to be separate species from the cock birds. "Grygallus" was his classical interpretation of a local Swiss name Grügelhahn (Gr. γρυζω gruzō  to grumble; L. gallus  hen); "TETRAO, L.  Urogallus, Briss. Grygallus, Gesn.    T. Urogallus, L., Pl. enl. 73, 74" (G. Gray 1840); "Grygallus G. Gray, 1840, List Genera Birds, p. 62.  Another name for Tetrao Linnaeus, 1758." (JAJ 2021).
