Limnodytes

(Podicipedidae; syn. Tachybaptus â€  Least Grebe T. dominicus) Gr. λιμνη limnÄ“  mere, marsh; genus Dytes Kaup, 1829, grebe; "Limnodytes Oberholser, new genus.  Similar to Dytes Kaup, but distance from anterior end of nostril to tip of culmen decidedly greater than distance from anterior end of nostril to rictus, instead of less or nearly equal; height of bill at base 1.3 times itswidth at same point, instead of about equal; head, without crest; wing about 3.75 times length of exposed culmen, instead of 5.5; tarsus decidedly shorter than middle toe without claw, instead of equal.  Type: Colymbus dominicus Linnaeus.  The Least Grebe, which has commonly been considered generically the same as most of the other grebes, proves to differ very interestingly in structural characters from all the others, and to constitute a monotypic genus. It is most closely allied to members of Tachybaptus Reichenbach (type, Colymbus ruficollis Pallas)" (Oberholser 1974); "Limnodytes Oberholser, 1974, Bird Life Texas, 2, p. 970.  Type, by original designation, Colymbus dominicus Linnaeus, 1766." (JAJ 2020).
