The Key to Scientific Names
- Mesophoyx
(Ardeidae; syn. Ardea † Intermediate Egret A. intermedia) Gr. μεσος mesos intermediate; φωυξ phōux heron; "Dr. Sharpe also proposed the name of MESOPHOYX, gen. nov., for the bird generally called Herodias intermedia, which was intermediate between the genera Ardea and Herodias. From the former it differed in having no ornamental nape-plumes, and in the possession of an enormous pectoral and dorsal patch of ornamental plumes, the dorsal train reaching far beyond the tail. From Herodias it is distinguished by its serrated bill and the difference in style of the ornamental breeding-plumes." (Sharpe 1894); "Mesophoyx Sharpe, Bull. Brit. Orn. Club, vol. iii. p. xxxviii, April 30th, 1894. Type (by original designation); Ardea intermedia Wagler." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 195).
