Coliopasser (See: Coliuspasser)
Coliuspasser

(Ploceidaesyn. Euplectes Ϯ Yellow-mantled Widowbird E. macroura macrocercus) Compound of genera Colius Brisson 1760, mousebird (considered by de Buffon 1770-1783, to be intermediate between the whydahs Vidua and the bullfinches Pyrrhula), and Passer Brisson, 1760, sparrow (i.e. small); "Die zwei bekannten Arten, Vidua paradisea Cuv., und V. erythrorhyncha Swainson (Emberiza vidua, Linné) finden sich schaarenweise in mehreren Gegenden Abyssinien; ausserdem noch zwei andere Vögel, deren Artenverwandte bisher gleichfalls wegen ihres langen Schwanzes zu der Gattung Vidua gerechnet wurden; da aber bei den ächten Viduen die Verlängerung des Schwanzes nicht durch die Steuerfedern, sondern durch die Schwanzdeckfedern veranlasst wird, so schlage ich vor, die Sperlinge, wo der lange Schwanz bloss eine Folge der ungewöhnlich langen Steuerfedern ist, in einer eigenen Untergattung abzusondern, wofür ich als Bezeichnung den Namen Coliuspasser in Anwendung bringe.  ...  Coliuspasser flaviscapulatus. Rüppell.  ...  Coliuspasser torquatus. Rüppell." (Rüppell 1840); "Notwithstanding the imprimatur which this name has received from Captain Shelley and Count Salvadori, I think it is so thoroughly opposed to the rules of classical nomenclature that it cannot be allowed to stand." (Sharpe 1890); "Coliuspasser Rüppell, 1840, Neue Wirbelthiere Fauna Abyssinien, Vögel, p. 98.  Type, by subsequent designation (G. Gray, 1855, Cat. Genera Subgenera Birds Brit. Mus., p. 71), Coliuspasser flaviscapulatus Rüppell, 1840 = Fringilla macrocerca Lichtenstein, 1823." (JAJ 2021).
Var. Coliostruthus (Gr. στρουθος strouthos  sparrow), Coliupasser, Coliopasser.

LOXIPASSER

(Thraupidae; Yellow-shouldered Grassquit L. anoxanthus) Portmanteau of genera Loxia Linnaeus, 1758, crossbill, and Passer Brisson 1760, sparrow; "Pyrrhulagra.   Loxia portoricensis Daud.  ...  The subgenus Loxigilla Lesson was founded on Fringilla noctis. The type of Bonaparte's subgenus Pyrrhulagra is the present bird, and includes violacea of the Bahamas, etc., but not anoxantha which may form the type of a third subgenus, Loxipasser, nearly allied to Spermophila and Phonipara. These three birds show well the folly of modern generic divisions, either of them approximating more closely to older genera than to each other." (Bryant 1866); "Loxipasser Bryant, Proc. Bost. Soc. N. H., 10, p. 254, 1866—type, by orig. desig., [Spermophila] anoxantha Gosse." (Hellmayr, 1938, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. XI, p. 158).

Smith), though having the colour characters of Passer domesticus (the genotype of Passer) differs very markedly therefrom in its massive bill, and may therefore be placed in a new subgenus, MEGAPASSER" (A. Roberts 1922); "Megapasser A. Roberts, 1922, Annals Transvaal Mus., VIII (4), p. 261.  Type, by monotypy, Passer motitensis A. Smith, 1848." (JAJ 2019).

PALUDIPASSER

(Estrildidae; Locustfinch P. locustella) L. palus, paludis  marsh; passer, passeris  sparrow; "PALUDIPASSER, gen. n.  Similar to Spermestes, but with a much more diminutive and slender bill, this being at the same time more compressed and not so rounded as in Spermestes.  The type is PALUDIPASSER LOCUSTELLA, sp. n.   ...   Hab. Marshes near Lake Bangweolo, 1st June, 1908." (Neave 1909); "Paludipasser Neave, 1909, Bull. British Ornith. Club, XXV, p. 25.  Type, by original designation, Paludipasser locustella Neave, 1909." (JAJ 2022).

passer

L. passer, passeris  sparrow.

PASSER

(Passeridae; Ϯ House Sparrow P. domesticus) L. passer, passeris  sparrow; "Rostro in apicem crassum & brevem exeunte; { Rostri basi capiti latitudine multo cedente. . . . . .Passer. Genus 33.   ...   XXXIII. Genus Passerinum.  Le genre du Moineau.  ...  1. LE MOINEAU FRANC  ...  PASSER DOMESTICUS.  ...  Ils se nourrissent de graines & d'Insectes. Ils font leur nid dans les trous des murs." (Brisson 1760): based on "Passer" and "Passer domesticus" of many authors (Brisson lists over 20 species and forms of 'Moineau'); "Passer Brisson, 1760, Orn., 1, p. 36. Type, by subsequent designation (Gray, 1840, List Gen. Birds, ed. 1, p. 46), Fringilla domestica Linnaeus." (Greenway in Peters, 1962, XV, p. 8).  No thanks to positive introduction, the House Sparrow, with a natural Palaearctic and western Indomalayan range, is now found throughout the world as a commensal of man. If the New Zealand wrens (Acanthisittiformes) and the tyrants and allies (Subosciniformes) are separated from the Passeriformes sens. lat. the remaining species could be titled Osciniformes.
Synon. Ammopasser, Auripasser, Caffropasser, Chrysospiza, Corospiza, Leucophrya, Megapasser, Pseudostruthus, Pyrgita, Pyrgitopsis, Salicipasser, Sorella.

PASSERCULUS

(Passerellidae; Savannah Sparrow P. sandwichensis) L. passerculus  little sparrow  < dim. passer, passeris  sparrow; "Le Petit Moineau de Bologne  ...  PASSERCULUS BONONIENSIS" (Brisson 1760): based on "Passerculus Brachyuros" of Aldrovandus 1599-1603; "Genus 151.  PASSERCULUS, Nobis.  216. PASSERCULUS SAVANNA, Nob. (Fringilla Savanna, Wils.)  Aud. pl. 109." (Bonaparte 1838); "Passerculus Bonaparte, 1838, Geog. Comp. List Birds Europe North Amer., p. 33.  Type, by subsequent designation (G. R. Gray, 1840, List Genera Birds, ed. 1, p. 46), Fringilla savanna Wilson." (Paynter in Peters, 1970, XIII, p. 68); "136. Passerculus sandwichensis  ...  Geographical variation of nominate race largely clinal: other proposed races are  ...  savanna (Savannah, in E Georgia)  ...  synonymized with nominate." (del Hoyo and Collar,  2016, HBW Illustrated Checklist, 2, Passerines, p. 802).

(Passerellidae; Fox Sparrow P. iliaca) Mod. L. passerella  little sparrow  < dim. L. passer, passeris  sparrow (cf. L. passercula  little sparrow; Late L. passarella  little sparrow  < passar  sparrow); "Passerella, Sw.  Bill short and perfectly conic, thick at the base, and rather abruptly pointed at the tip, which is entire.  Culmen perfectly straight.  Both mandibles of equal thickness.  Wings moderate; the first quill shorter than the second, third, and fourth, which are the longest.  Tail moderate, broad, and nearly even.  Feet large, strong.  Middle toe longer than the tarsus; inner toe much shorter than the outer.  Claws long, slender, and but slightly curved; hinder claw as long as the toe.   America.    P. Iliaca.  Wilson, iii. 22. f. 4." (Swainson 1837); "Passerella Swainson, 1837, Nat. Hist. Classification Birds, II, p. 288.  Type, by monotypy, P. iliaca Wilson, i.e. Fringilla iliaca Merrem, 1786." (JAJ 2022).  Despite intergradation amongst them, the four main groupings of this sparrow have sometimes been treated as separate species, i.e. Red Fox Sparrow P. iliaca, Sooty Fox Sparrow P. unalaschensis, Slate-coloured Fox Sparrow P. schistacea, and Thick-billed Fox Sparrow P. megarhyncha.
Var. Passarella.

Passerherbulus

Ammodramus Le Conte's Sparrow A. leconteii) L. passer, passeris  sparrow; herbula  little herb  < dim. herba  grass, weed; "COTURNICULUS  ...  All the species are streaked above, and some have narrow lines below where there is more or less buff.  The edge of the wing is yellow.  The feet are quite small.  I do not include Leconte's Bunting under this head, for I think that it should be placed in a separate genus, for which I propose the name, Passerherbulus; for generic characters of which see the forthcoming appendix." (Maynard 1895); "COTURNICULUS Bp. 1838, becomes AMMODRAMUS Sw. 1827.—Cf. Oberholser Smithson. Misc. Coll., Quart. Issue, III, pt. 1, p. 67.    AMMODRAMUS Sw. 1827 becomes PASSERHERBULUS Mayn. 1895. —In the paper above quoted Mr. Oberbolser [sic], finding no name available for the group formerly known as Ammodramus, proposed the excellent name Ammospiza.  Dr. Richmond, however, finds the name Passerherbulus proposed for Ammodramus lecontei, a member of this genus, by C. J. Maynard, Birds of Eastern N. A., 2nd ed., pt. 40, 1895, p. 707, and on grounds of priority it must be adopted." (Stone 1907); "Passerherbulus 1 Stone, Auk, 24, p. 193, 1907—type, by orig. desig., Emberiza leconteii Audubon = Fringilla caudacuta Latham.   ...   1 First proposed by Maynard (Bds. East. N. Amer., 2nd ed., Part 40, p. 707, 1895), but invalid under the Rules, as the type species is indicated only with the vernacular name "Leconte's Bunting."" (Hellmayr, 1938, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. XI, p. 502).
