Fulica † Giant Coot F. gigantea) L. phalaris, phalaridis unidentified waterbird, probably the coot < Gr. φαλαρις phalaris, φαλαριδος phalaridos unidentified waterbird, probably the coot < φαλος phalos white; "Genera et Species typicae. ... 2. Phalaria RCHB. gigas (Ful. — Eyd. et Souleyet.) R. (Phalaris Gesn. non Botanic.) Ic. Av. t. 188. ic. 2454." (Reichenbach 1853); "Phalaria Reichenbach, 1853, Avium Systema Naturale, p. XXI. Type, by original designation, Fulica gigas Eyd. et Souleyet = Fulcia [sic] gigantea Eydoux and Souleyet, 1841. Reichenbach's text could be read as a new name for "Phalaris Gessner" (a pre-Linnaean, non-binomial name) considered preoccupied in Botany (Phalaris Linnaeus, 1755)." (JAJ 2020).
