MUSCISAXICOLA

(Tyrannidae; Ϯ Rufous-naped Ground Tyrant M. rufivertex) Portmanteau of genera Muscicapa Brisson 1760, flycatcher, and Saxicola auct. (= Oenanthe Vieillot 1816), wheatear; "G. MUSCISAXICOLA. Nob.   Pedibus valde elongatis, gracilibus, unguibus anticis brevibus, postice longiore parum curvato, alis prælongis, acuminatis; cauda mediocris apice recto; rostro tenui, valde compresso, elongato, non basi depresso, quibus omnibus characteribus habituque toto Saxicolis hujus generis species proxime accedunt.   ...   1. M. rufivertex, Nob.   ...   2. M. mentalis, Nob.   ...   3. M. maculirostris, Nob.   ...   4. M. striaticeps, Nob." (d'Orbigny & de La Fresnaye 1837); "Muscisaxicola d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1837, Mag. Zool. [Paris], 7, cl. 2, p. 65.  Type, by subsequent designation (G. R. Gray, 1840, List Genera Birds, p. 24), Muscisaxicola rufivertex d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye." (Traylor in Peters, 1979, VIII, p. 168).  I have elsewhere suggested that the birds of this genus be given the substantive name of Dormilona (from the Spanish dormilona  sleepy-head, with ref. to the birds' frequent inactivity).
Synon. Ptyonura.

L. saxum, saxi  stone, rock; -cola  dweller  < colere  to inhabit.

SAXICOLA

(Muscicapidae; European Stonechat S. rubicola) L. saxum, saxi  stone; -cola  dweller  < colere  to inhabit; "Gattung. Steinschmätzer. Saxicola.   ...  Sie machen den schicklichsten Uebergang zu den Fliegenfängern nach Gestalt und Lebensart; nisten auf der Erde oder in Löchern, und fressen blos Insekten, und zwar Käferarten und Fliegen.  *1. Großer Steinschmätzer (S. Oenanthe).   ...  *2. Braunkehliger Steinschmätzer (S. Rubetra).   ...  †3. Schwarzkehliger Steinschmätzer (S. Rubicola)" (Bechstein 1802); “Bechstein’s genus Saxicola  ...  contains three species only: œnanthe (Wheatear), rubetra (Whinchat), and rubicola (Stonechat). No type was originally designated, but Swainson (Zoologist Journ. iii. 1827, p. 172) subsequently fixed as the type Motacilla rubicola. Gray in 1841 and Seebohm (Cat. Bds. B. M. v. 1881, p. 362) made “œnanthe” the type; there can be no doubt, however, that Swainson’s designation must stand, and another name be found for the Wheatears” (BOU 1915); "Saxicola Bechstein, Orn. Taschenb. vol. i. p. 216, 1802.  Type (by subsequent designation, Selby, Illustr. Brit. Ornith. 1825): Motacilla rubicola L." (Mathews, 1930, Syst. Av. Austral., II, 588); "Saxicola Bechstein, 1803, Orn. Taschenb., (1802), p. 216.  Type, by subsequent designation (Swainson, 1827, Zool. Journ., 3, p. 172), Motacilla rubicola Linnaeus." (Ripley in Peters, 1964, X, p. 104).
Var. Laxicola.
Synon. CurrucaFruticicola, Pratincola, Rhodophila, Rubetra.
● (Muscicapidae; syn. Oenanthe Northern Wheatear O. oenanthe) Formerly this name was much used for the wheatears and similar chat-like species (e.g. Hartert, 1910, Vögel paläarktischen Fauna, I, pp. 678-701).
