ACANTHISITTA

(Acanthisittidae; Ϯ Rifleman A. chloris) Portmanteau of genera Acanthiza Vigors & Horsfield, 1827, thornbill, and Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; "G. ACANTHISITTE.  ACANTHISITTA. De Lafr.  ... A. TÉNUIROSTRE. A. tenuirostris. De Lafr.   Acanthisa tenuirostris. Nob. Rev. zool., 1841, p. 242.  Ce très petit oiseau, le seul que nous connassions de ce genre, a tout le dessus du corps vert-olive avec le front d'un brunâtre enfumé" (de La Fresnaye 1842); "Acanthisitta Lafresnaye, 1842, Mag. Zool., [Paris], ser. 2, 4, pl. 27 and pp. 1-2 of text. Type, by monotypy, [Acanthisa tenuirostris de La Fresnaye =] Sitta chloris Sparrman." (Mayr in Peters, 1979, VIII, p. 331). The New Zealand wrens belong to an ancient lineage and should, perhaps, be separated from other passerines in a distinct order Acanthisittiformes.
Var. Acanthidositta.
Synon. Chlorisitta.

ALIPIOPSITTA

(Psittacidae; Ϯ Yellow-faced Parrot A. xanthops) Portmanteau of first name Alípio (after Prof. Alípio de Miranda-Ribeiro (1874-1939) Brazilian zoologist) and Gr. ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; "Miranda-Ribeiro  ...  described the monotypic genus Salvatoria to distinguish the Yellow-faced Parrot  ...  from the "true" Amazon parrots  ...  However, this name is preoccupied by Salvatoria McIntosh, 1885, a genus of exogonin syllid polychaetes  ...  For lack of an available and potentially valid synonym, we propose to replace Salvatoria Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 by the name: Alipiopsitta" (Caparroz & Pacheco 2006); "Alipiopsitta Caparroz and Pacheco, 2006, Rev. Brasileira de Ornitologia, XIV, p. 174.  New name for Salvatoria Miranda-Ribeiro, 1922, not of McIntosh, 1885 (Polychaeta)." (JAJ 2021).
Synon. Salvatoria.

Amoropsittaca

(Psittacidae; syn. Psilopsiagon  Grey-hooded Parakeet P. aymara) Gr. αμορος amoros  unlucky  < αμοιρεω amoireō  to have no share in; ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; "BOLBORHYNCHUS BONAPARTE.  As originally proposed in Comptes Rendus, XLIV, 1857, p. 596, this name is a pure nomen nudum, and recent authors have turned to Souancé, Icon. Perroquets, 1857, for the purpose of determining the type species, which has been fixed as Arara aymara D'Orbigny.   ...   Unfortunately for nomenclature, Bonaparte introduced some additional matter in the author's separately paged reprint [Remarques Obs. Blanchard Caractères Psittacides 1857] of this paper, which is, in fact, a combination of two papers from the Comptes Rendus and has priority over Souancé's work.  Here we find (p. 6) Bolborhynchus as a valid name, with two ostensible species, Myiopsitta tigrina Souancé, and Myiopsitta catharina Bonaparte, both now synonymized under Bolborhynchus lineola (Cassin).  I accordingly designate Myiopsitta catharina Bonaparte (= Psittacula lineola Cassin) as type, since M. tigrina, said to be from Venezuela, may prove to be different.  It follows that Grammopsittaca Ridgway is a pure synonym of Bolborhynchus, and that aymara is without a genus.  For this species I propose the generic term Amoropsittaca § (type, Arara aymara D'Orbigny).   ...   § αμορος, unlucky; ψιττακη, a parrot." (Richmond 1915); "Amoropsittaca Richmond, Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 28, 1915, p. 183.  Type, by original designation, Arara aymara d'Orbigny." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 200).

Anabasitta

(Furnariidae; syn. Margarornis Pearled Treerunner M. squamiger) Portmanteau of genera Anabates Temminck, 1820, spinetail, and Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; "ANABASITTA (d'Anabates et de Sitta). OIS. Anabasitta squamigera, Lafr." (de La Fresnaye & d'Orbigny 1853); "Anabasitta LAFRESNAYE a , Rev. Mag. Zool., (2) 5, p. 492, Nov. 1853— type [by original designation]  Anabates squamiger LAFRESNAYE and D'ORBIGNY.  ...  In Dict. Univ. Hist. Nat., I, p. 411, 1841, where it first appeared in print, Anabasitta is a nomen nudum." (Hellmayr, 1925, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. IV, p. 170).

Arctositta

(Sittidae; syn. Sitta Siberian Nuthatch S. arctica) L. arctos  north  < Gr. αρκτος arktos  north; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch (cf. specific name Sitta arctica Buturlin, 1907); "Sittinae.  ...  VII. Arctositta gen. nov.  1. arctica (But.) 1907.  ...  Gen. Arctositta gen. nov. (monotype: Sitta arctica But.)" (Buturlin 1916) (OD per Laurent Raty); "Arctositta S. A. BUTURLIN, Travaux Soc. Imp. Nat. Pétrograd, XLIV, Livr. 2  1916, 151, 156, 168.  Type, Sitta arctica BUTURLIN.  (Original designation and monotypy.)" (Richmond, Proc. U. S. Nat. Mus., 70, art. 15, no. 2664, p. 5).

Austropsitta (See: Austropitta)
Austropitta

(Pittidae; syn. Pitta Indian Pitta P. brachyura) L. australis  southern  < auster, austri  south; genus Pitta Vieillot, 1816, pitta; "Austropitta, nom. nov., for Coloburis Cabanis und Heine, Mus. Hein., Vol. II., p. 3, 1859: type, Pitta strepitans, Temminck = Pitta versicolor Swainson; not Colobura Billberg, Enum. Insect., p. 19, 1820.  Colobura Blanchard in Gay's Chili, Vol. V., p. 511, 1851; not Coloburus Dumeril, in Inst. de le Mem., Vol. XXIII., p. 399, 1853" (Mathews 1913); "Austropitta Mathews, Austral Av. Rec. vol. ii. p. 26, Oct. 23rd, 1913.  Type (by original designation): Pitta versicolor Swainson (new name for Coloburis Cabanis & Heine." (Mathews, 1930, Syst. Av. Austral., II, p. 431); "Austropitta Mathews, 1913. Austral Avian Record, II, p. 26.  New name for Coloburis Cabanis and Heine, 1859, considered preoccupied by Colobura Billberg, 1820 (Lepidoptera), by Colobura Blanchard, 1851 (Coleoptera), and by Coloburus Dumeril, 1853 (Reptilia).  Mathews is incorrect in treating Pitta versicolor Swainson, 1825, as the type of Coloburis." (JAJ 2021).
Var. Austropsitta.

autositta

Gr. αυτος autos  very, ideal, only; genus Sitta Linnaeus 1758, nuthatch  (syn. Sitta europaea).

BOLBOPSITTACUS

(Psittaculidae; Ϯ Guaiabero B. lunulatus) Gr. βολβος bolbos  bulb (i.e. bulbous); ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "BOLBOPSITTACUS.  Bolbopsittacus, Salvad. MS. . . . Type. B. lunulatus.  Bill very thick, with both mandibles much swollen; upper mandible with the edges sinuated, not sharply toothed; tail very short. The birds of this genus formed part of Cyclopsittacus, but the file-like surface of the distal portion of the palate shows very clearly that they do not belong in the Cyclopsittacidæ." (Salvadori 1891); "Bolbopsittacus Salvadori, Cat. Bds. Brit. Mus., 20, 1891, p. xvi, 388 (in key), 503.  Type, by original designation, Psittacus lunulatus Scopoli." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 253).

Type, by monotypy, Sitta formosa Blyth." (Greenway in Peters, 1967, XII, p. 125).
Var. Calisitta, Callicitta, Calositta.

Callipsittacus (See: Calopsitta)
Calopsitta

(Cacatuidae; syn. Nymphicus Cockatiel N. hollandicus) Gr. καλος kalos  beautiful; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; "Sous-Genre: CALOPSITTE, Calopsitta, LESS.  ... Les deux individus que nous avons fait peindre nous ont été communiqués par M. Guy.  ... LE CALOPSITTE GUY, Calopsitta Guy, LESSON.  Psittacus Novæ Hollandiæ, LATH., Index, sp. 59.  P. macrourus, fusco-olivaceus, capite e pennis sex cristata luteo; pone oculos macula auriantiaca; fascia alarum alba: Hab. Nova Gallia meridionalis" (Lesson 1835); "Calopsitta Lesson, Illustr. Zool. pl. xlix., about June 1835.  Type (by monotypy): C. guy Lesson = Psittacus hollandicus Kerr." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 318).
Var. Callipsittacus, Callopsitta, Calopsittacus.

CHALCOPSITTA

(Psittaculidae; Ϯ Black Lory C. atra) Gr. χαλκος khalkos  bronze; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. (Platycercus ater, Go.), 2º Psittacus scintillans, Wagl. (Eos scintillata, Gr.), et 3º une nouvelle des îles Barabay et Guebe, rapportée par les intrépides navigateurs français, et dont le type doit se trouver dans le Musée du Jardin des Plantes; ce sera: Chalcopsitta rubiginosa, Bonap. D'un rouge marron (teinte inusitée et peut-être unique parmi les Perroquets), à reflets cuivrés.  ...  La grandeur de ce curieux Psittacide est celle d'une Grive." (Bonaparte 1850); "Chalcopsitta Bonaparte, 1850, Comptes Rendus Acad. Sci. Paris, XXX, p. 134.  Type, by subsequent designation (G. Gray, 1855, Cat. Genera Subgenera Birds Brit. Mus., p. 86), Psittacus ater Scopoli, 1786." (JAJ 2021).
Synon. Cardeos, Chalcopsittacus, Moniapura.

Chalcopsittacus

(Psittacidae; syn. Chalcopsitta † Yellow-streaked Lory C. scintillata chloroptera) Gr. χαλκος khalkos  bronze; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; “Sp. 90.  Chalcopsittacus chloropterus, nov. sp.   Chalcopsittacus C. scintillato (Temm.) simillimus, sed tectricibus alarum inferioribus viridibus, et remigibus intus fuscis, fere unicoloribus, vix basin versus flavicantibus.” (Salvadori 1876); “Chalcopsittacus Salvadori, 1876, Annali Museo Civico di Storia Naturale Genova, IX, p. 15.  Type, by monotypy, Chalcopsittacus chloropterus Salvadori, 1876.  This genus could also be treated as a replacement name for the unacceptable hybrid Chalcopsitta Bonaparte, 1850 (then retaining that genus' type species).” (JAJ 2023).

Chlorisitta

(Acanthisittidaesyn. Acanthisitta Ϯ Rifleman A. chloris) Portmanteau of specific name Sitta chloris Sparrman, 1787; "Acanthisitta Gray, Append. List. Gen. Birds, March 1, 1842, p. 6; logotype, ibid. 1855, p. 31, Motacilla longipes Gmelin, is older than the same genus of Lafresnaye, 1842, after March 1. This necessitates the use of this genus for the Bush-Wrens   ...   As a new genus is required for the Rifleman, I propose CHLORISITTA, nom. nov., with Sitta chloris Sparrman as type." (Mathews 1935); "Chlorisitta Mathews, 1935, Bull. Brit. Ornith. Club, 55, p. 113.  ...  Mathews based his description of Chlorisitta on two false claims. The first is that Lafresnaye's name was preoccupied by Acanthisitta G. R. Gray, 1842, List Genera Birds, ed. 2, appen., p. 6. However, the internal evidence is opposed to this assumption, since Gray in the 1842 publication, and subsequently, consistently credited Lafresnaye with the name. Furthermore, Gray did not designate longipes as the type; in fact he did not designate a type since he was merely using Lafresnaye's prior name." (Mayr in Peters, 1979, VIII, p. 331).

Coryphositta

(Sittidae; syn. Sitta † White-breasted Nuthatch S. carolinensis) Gr. κορυφη koruphē  crown of the head  < κορυς korus, κορυθος koruthos  helmet; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch (JG; see Manuscript-names).

Cruopsitta

(Psittacidae; syn. Psittaculirostris Edwards's Fig Parrot P. edwardsii) Gr. κρυος kruos, κρυεος krueos  frost (alluding to the frosted appearance of the facial feathers); Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē   parrot; "A series of birds classed in Cyclopsittacus have the cere feathered: in addition they are larger birds with projecting bills of narrower contour, the under-mandible with the face multi-ridged.  ...  As a secondary adjunct, in some cases they have developed a facial ornament of long feathers on the cheeks and ear-coverts.  This group is as well marked as any genus of Parrots, and I consider it of much better value than, say, Eutelipsitta or Charmosynopsis.  I therefore provide for it the new genus-name CRUOPSITTA, and name Cyclopsittacus edwardsii Oustalet as type" (Mathews 1916); "Cruopsitta Mathews, Birds Austr. vol. vi. pt. i. p. 64, Nov. 22nd, 1916.  Type (by original designation): Cyclopsittacus edwardsi Oust." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austr., I, p. 307).

CYANOPSITTA

(Psittacidae; Spix's Macaw C. spixii) Gr. κυανος kuanos  dark-blue; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; "a. Cyanopsitta, Bp.  —  2. Glaucus, Vieill.  —  3. Spixi, Wagl." (Bonaparte 1854); "Cyanopsitta Bonap., Rev. et Mag. de Zool., 1854, p. 149  (Type Sittace spixii Wagl.)." (Cory, 1918, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. II (1), 52); "CYANOPSITTA Bonaparte, 1854  F— Sittace spixii Wagler, 1832; type by subsequent designation (Salvadori, 1891, Cat. Birds Brit. Mus., 20, p. 150)." (Dickinson and Remsen (eds.), H. & M. Complete Checklist, 4th ed., 2013, 1 (Non-passerines), p. 367) (N.B.: G. Gray, 1855, Cat. Genera Subgenera Birds Brit. Mus., p. 87, gives Psittacus glaucus Vieillot, as the type of this genus).
Var. Cyanopsittacus (Gr. ψιττακος psittakos  parrot).

Cyanositta

(Sittidae; syn. Sitta Velvet-fronted Nuthatch S. frontalis corallipes) Gr. κυανος kuanos dark-blue; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; "Cyanosittinae.   ...   V. Cyanositta gen. nov.   1. corallipes (Sharpe) 1888.   2. frontalis (Swains.) 1821   ...    3. oenochlamys (Sharpe) 1876.   ...   Gen. Cyanositta Gen. nov. (type: Dendrophila corallipes Sharpe.)" (Buturlin 1916) (OD per Laurent Raty); "Cyanositta Buturlin, 1916, Travaux Soc. Imp. Nat. Petrograd, XLIV (2), p. 149.  Type, by original designation, Dendrophila corallipes Sharpe, 1888." (JAJ 2021).

CYCLOPSITTA

(Psittaculidae; Ϯ Double-eyed Fig Parrot C. diophthalma) Gr. myth. Cyclops, a race of giants in Sicily having but one eye in the middle of their foreheads  < κυκλωψ kuklōps, κυκλωπος kuklōpos  round-eyed  < κυκλος kuklos  circle; ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos  eye; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ... Syn. PSITTACULA DIOPHTHALMA, Homb. et Jacq. Ann. des Sciences nat., 2e série, vol. XVI, p. 318" (Jacquinot & Pucheran 1853); "Cyclopsitta was introduced by Reichenbach, Syst. Av. tab. lxxxii. 1850, where figures of a head, tail, wing, and claw are given. It seems to be a composite effort, as the head most resembles that of Trichoglossus versicolor [= Psitteuteles versicolor] Lear, the tail is unlike that of C. diophthalma Jacquinot and Pucheran, while the wing does not seem like that of any of these little parrots. It can certainly not be used for this genus, and I have rejected it as indeterminable." (Mathews 1912). At first sight the parrot labelled Cyclopsitta on Reichenbach's 1850, pl. LXXXII, appears to bear little resemblance to any fig parrot. Certainly the head has much of Lorius about it. However, Reichenbach's plate was based on Hombron & Jacquinot 1846, Voyage au Pôle Sud, Atlas Zoologique, plate 25bis, where figure B therein shows the distinctive ridged lower mandible of the genus. This was overlooked by Mathews 1912, and not included in the figures supplied by Mathews 1916/1917, Birds of Australia, VI, p. 63; "Cyclopsitta Reichenbach, 1850, Avium Syst. Nat.: 82.  Type, by subsequent designation (Pucheran, 1853, Mammif. Ois. In Hombron & Jacquinot, Voyag. Pôle Sud), Psittacula diophthalma Hombron and Jacquinot." (Beehler and Pratt, 2016, Birds New Guinea, p. 259) (see Opopsitta).
Var. Cyclopsittacus (Gr. ψιττακος psittakos  parrot), Cychlopsitta.
Synon. Manopsitta, Nannopsittacus, Opopsitta, Suavipsitta.

DAPHOENOSITTA

(Neosittidae; Black Sittella D. miranda) Gr. δαφοινος daphoinos  reeking with blood  < δα- da-  very; φοινος phoinos  blood-red, bloody; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; the Black Sittella was formerly known as the Pink-faced Nuthatch; “18.  DAPHŒNOSITTA MIRANDA, gen. et sp. nov.   DAPHŒNOSITTA, gen. nov.  Bill subulate, straight, shorter than the head, not notched; nostril basal, exposed, in front of an operculated groove; no rictal bristles  …  DAPHŒNOSITTA MIRANDA, sp. nov.  Above and below black, the feathers broadly edged with lead-grey; wing and tail fuscous brown; the four rectrices largely tipped with pink, nearly half the outermost being of that colour; rump stained with crimson; forehead, chin, and some feathers of the orbital ring rich crimson; metacarpal edge and adjacent under wing-coverts white; middle third of primaries and secondaries white on under surface of inner webs, forming a broad band across the wing; lateral rectrices below darker pink than on the upper surface   ...  Apart from the shortness and straightness of the bill, this bird is structurally a Sittella, and, were it not for its very erratic colouring, its bill would hardly prevent it finding a home in that genus. But on the ground that so wide a departure from the characteristic sobriety in colours of the Sittellas, and indeed of the Creepers generally, argues physical differences not apparent to the eye, it appears to me advisable to provide a separate genus for the present bird." (DeVis 1897); "Daphoenositta DeVis, 1897, Ibis, p. 380.  Type, by monotypy, Daphoenositta miranda DeVis, 1897." (JAJ 2022).
Var. Daphaenositta, Daphoenosina.
Synon. Neops, Neositta, Neosittella.

Dendrositta (See: DENDROCITTA)
DENDROCITTA

(Corvidae; Ϯ White-bellied Treepie D. leucogastra) Gr. δενδρον dendron  tree; κιττα kitta  magpie; "The genus proposed by Mr. Gould comprehends the Pica vagabunda, Wagl., Pica Sinensis, Gray, and a third species which the author believes to have been hitherto unnoticed.  To this group, on account of its arboreal habits, he gives the name of  DENDROCITTA.  Rostrum capite brevius, cultratum, ad basin latum, culmine arcuato, lateribus subtumidis.  Nares basales, plumis setaceis partim tectæ. Alæ mediocres, remigibus 5ta 6taque longioribus.  Cauda elongata, cuneata, rectricibus spatulatis.  Tarsi breves, debiles.  Digiti mediocres.  Hallux fortis, ungue forti, incurvo.  Typus genericus. DENDROCITTA LEUCOGASTRA.  ...  The shortness and comparative feeblenessof the tarsi in Dendrocitta, and its more elongated tail, the feathers of which are equally graduated, except the two middle ones which are much longer than the others, distinguish it from the typical Picæ, the common Magpie for example.  These characters are in accordance with its habit of wandering from tree to tree in search of its food. It is further distinguished by the form of its bill.  All the species yet known are natives of Eastern Asia." (Gould 1833); "Dendrocitta Gould, 1833, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, p. 57.  Type, by original designation, Dendrocitta leucogastra Gould." (Vaurie in Peters, 1962, XV, p. 246).
Var. Dendrositta.
Synon. Vagabunda.

DIOPSITTACA

(Psittacidae; Ϯ Red-shouldered Macaw D. nobilis) Gr. διος dios   noble; ψιττακη psittakē or ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "Diopsittaca gen. nov.  Type, Psittacus nobilis Linnæus.  Differing from Ara in much smaller size (wing less than 300 mm.); bill much broader, more swollen laterally, the width of maxilla at base equal to much more than half the length (chord) of culmen, the greatest width of mandible equal to length (chord) of gonys; maxillary unguis extremely attenuated and acute (as in Ognorhynchus Gray); tail shorter than wing, and cheeks normally feathered.  Differing from Ognorhynchus in naked lores, absence of an exposed post-mandibular naked area, and other characters.   (Διος, noble; ψιττακη, a parrot.)" (Ridgway 1912); "Diopsittaca Ridgway, Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 25, 1912, p. 99.  Type, by original designation, Psittacus nobilis Linné." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 180).

(Psittacidae; syn. Eupsittula † Orange-fronted Parakeet E. canicularis) Gr. New name for Eupsittula Bonaparte, 1853, considered a barbarous hybrid and unusable." (JAJ 2021).

Eupsittacula

(Psittacidae; syn. Eupsittula † Orange-fronted Parakeet E. canicularis) Gr. ευ eu  fine; Mod. L. psittacula  parakeet  < dim. L. psittacus  parrot  < Gr. ...   Eupsittacula, Bp.” (Miranda Ribeiro 1922); “Eupsittacula “Bp.” Miranda Ribeiro, 1922, Revista do Museu Paulista, XII (1920), pp. 9, 28.  New name for Eupsittula Bonaparte, 1853, considered poorly formed.” (JAJ 2023).

L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē  parrot (cf. anagram of genus Psitteuteles auct., lorikeet); "Genus CLXXVIII. Eutelipsitta nom. nov. replaces Psitteuteles nec Bonaparte.   Genus CLXXIX. Psitteuteles Bonaparte replaces Ptilosclera (Bp.) Gould.  ...  Gray's designation invalidated all later type differentiations, and consequently Ptilosclera must be replaced by Psitteuteles, and a new name is necessary for the group erroneously known by the latter name.  I therefore propose Eutelipsitta, and designate as type Psittacus chlorolepidotus Kuhl." (Mathews 1911); "Eutelipsitta Mathews, Nov. Zool., 18, 1911, p. 10.  New name for Psitteuteles of authors, not of Bonaparte." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 147).

Geopsittacus

(Psittaculidaesyn. Pezoporus Ϯ Night Parrot P. occidentalis) Gr. γεω- geō-  ground-  < γη gē  earth; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "GEOPSITTACUS OCCIDENTALIS, Gould.   ...   Hab. Western Australia.  Remark.— At a first glance this bird has the appearance of a Pezophorus formosus with an undeveloped tail; but on a careful comparison it is found not only to differ from that species in some parts of its colouring, but also in form—sufficiently so, indeed, to warrant the opinion that it will be necessary to make it the type of a new genus.  Its whole contour and colour reminds one of Strigops.  The points in which it differs from Pezoporus are the possession of a thick bluffy head, larger and more swollen nostrils, the total absence of any red mark on the forehead, a much larger wing with more rounded primaries, a very short tail the two centre feathers of which are much shorter than the two next on each side, and, lastly, in having very differently formed feet, with short and feeble nails, whereas in Pezoporus they are prolonged and slender.  For this new bird I propose the generic name of Geopsittacus, with that of occidentalis as its specific designation." (Gould 1861); "Geopsittacus Gould, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1861, p. 100. Type, by monotypy, Geopsittacus occidentalis Gould." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 273). The nocturnal, terrestrial Night Parrot was considered extinct, but tiny groups have now been rediscovered in very remote spinifex habitat in the Channel Country of Queensland and the Pilbara of Western Australia, with a world population thought to be less than thirty individuals.

GEOSITTA

(Furnariidae; Common Miner G. cunicularia fissirostris) Gr. γεω- geō-  ground-, earth-  < γη gē  earth; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; the terrestrial Common Miner was classified with the nuthatches, subfamily Sittinae, by Swainson 1837, because of its straight bill, short tail, and long hind-toe with a curved, lengthened claw; "GEOSITTA, Sw.  (fig. 283.)   Bill longer than the head, trigonal at the base, cylindrical beyond. Culmen rounded. The tip of the upper mandible entire, broader than high, and slightly bent over the lower. Wings long, pointed; the first quill nearly equal to the second and third, which are longest; tertials lengthened. Tail slightly forked. Feet slender. Anterior toes rather short; the lateral ones unequal, the claws small; hind toe as long as the middle toe, but shorter than the tarsus; the claw much lengthened, and slightly curved.  Chili.   G. anthoïdes.  Part 5. LOPHOPSITTACUS

‡ (Psittaculidae; Broad-billed Parrot L. mauritianus) Gr. λοφος lophos  crest; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; the Broad-billed Parrot is known only from subfossil remains and the variable accounts and drawings of early travellers, but has not been recorded since the third quarter of the 17th century; "I think Prof. Schlegel is clearly right in assigning it to Psittacus mauritianus Owen, which we only know from a few bones. The most extraordinary feature it presents is perhaps the frontal crest, of a shape quite unlike that found, so far as I am aware, in any other form of Parrot, rising as it does from the very base of the bill and terminating before it reaches the occiput, which appears to be flat and smooth.  ...  I would therefore propose the name of LOPHOPSITTACUS for the group of which it is the type - the only known external character that we can as yet depend upon being the that afforded by the singular frontal crest" (A. Newton 1875); "Lophopsittacus A. Newton, Proc. Zool. Soc. 1875, p. 350.  Type by original designation, Psittacus mauritianus Owen." (W. Sclater, 1924, Syst. Av. Aethiop., I, p. 205).

This antedates and should supersede Lophopsittacus Newton, 1875.” (Richmond, 1917, Proc. MELOPSITTACUS

This animated disposition is as conspicuous in confinement as in its native wilds; a pair now before me are in exuberant health after having braved the severities of a passage to this country by way of Cape Horn in the midst of winter.   ....    As cage-birds they are as interesting as can possibly be imagined; for, independently of their highly ornamental appearance, they differ from all the other members of their family that I am acquainted with, in having a most animated and pleasing song; besides which, they are constantly billing, cooing, and feeding each other, and assuming every possible variety of graceful position. Their inward warbling song, which cannot be described, is unceasingly poured forth from morn to night, and is even continued throughout the night if they are placed in a room with lights, and where an animated conversation is carried on.  In a state of nature they feed exclusively upon grass-seeds, with which their crops are always found crammed; in confinement they thrive equally well upon canary-seed." (Gould 1840); "Melopsittacus Gould, Bds. Austr., pt. 1, 1840, pl. [10] [= 5, pl. 44 of bound volume]. Type, by monotypy, Psittacus undulatus Shaw." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 272).

(Ridgway 1912); "Nannopsittaca Ridgway, Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 25, 1912, p. 100.  Type, by original designation and monotypy, Brotogerys panychlorus Salvin and Godman." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 208).

Nannopsittacus

(Psittacidae; syn. Cyclopsitta  Dusky-cheeked Fig Parrot C. melanogenia suavissima) Gr. ναννος nannos  dwarf; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "There is another group of very small birds with square tails which, however, must be regarded as a very distinct genus.  In this group the cere is naked, the bill projecting, the face of the lower mandible three-ridged.  The wing has the first three primaries practically equal, with the fourth very little less; a wing-formula unlike either of the preceding.  The tail is very short, almost hidden by the upper and under tail-coverts, the former slightly shorter, the latter equal; it has the feathers broad, not pointed, and the tail is square, not wedge-shaped, and much less than half the length of the wing.  I name as type Cyclopsitta suavissima Sclater, introducing for it the generic name NANNOPSITTACUS.  This includes the species guglielmi III., melanogenys and nigrifrons of the British Museum Catalogue." (Mathews 1916); "Nannopsittacus Mathews, 1916, Birds of Australia, VI (1), p. 65.  Type, by original designation, Cyclopsitta suavissima P. Sclater, 1876." (JAJ 2021).

NECROPSITTACUS

‡ (Psittaculidae; Rodrigues Parrot N. rodricanus) Gr. νεκρος nekros  dead; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; the Rodrigues Parrot was described from bones and contemporary accounts, being last recorded in 1761; "Psittacus rodericanus   ...   Les deux mandibules du Perroquet de Rodrigue suffisent parfaitement pour indiquer les affinités de cette espèce, et nous montrent que, bien que se rapprochant des Lorinæ, cet oiseau avait, avec les Palæornis, d'incontestables affinités.  Aussi je proposerai d'établir par lui, à côté de ces derniers, un petit groupe générique portant le nom de Necropsittacus" (A. Milne-Edwards 1874); "Necropsittacus A. Milne-Edwards, Ann. Sci. Nat. (5) xix, art. 3, p. 18, 1874.  Type by original designation, Psittacus rodricanus M.-Edw." (W. Sclater, 1924, Syst. Av. Aethiop., I, p. 202).
Var. Necopsittacus.

NEOPSITTACUS

(Psittaculidae; Ϯ Yellow-billed Lorikeet N. musschenbroekii) Gr. νεος neos  new, different; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "Gen. nov. Neopsittacus, SALVAD.  Sp. 34. Neopsittacus musschenbroekii (ROSENB.).  ...  Questa species ha il becco notevolmente diverso da quello dei Trichoglossini; la mandibola superiore è molto più fortemente incurvata, e la inferiore è molto meno prominente all' innanzi e coll' angolo (gonys) largo e formante anteriormente una superficie piana. Per tali caratteri questa specie differisce da tutte quelle del gruppo dei Trichoglossini, ai quali forse neppure appartiene, per cui ho creduto di doverne fare il tipo di un genere distinto." (Salvadori 1875); "Neopsittacus Salvadori, Ann. Mus. Civ. Genova, 7, 1875, p. 761. Type, by monotypy, Nanodes musschenbroekii Schlegel." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 162).

neositta

Gr. νεος neos  new; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch (syn. Climacteris affinis superciliosus).

Neositta

(Neosittidae; syn. Daphoenositta  Varied Sittella D. chrysoptera) Gr. νεος neos new; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; "Sitella. (Hellmayr 1901); "Neositta Hellmayr, 1901, Journ. f. Orn., 49, p. 187.  Type, by monotypy, Sittella chrysoptera Latham. New name for Sittella Swainson, preoccupied." (Greenway in Peters, 1967, XII, p. 145).  Until the early years of the 20th century the sittellas were considered to be allied to the nuthatches Sittidae.  In the past the various subspecies of this bird have been treated as separate species (e.g. D. leucocephala, D. striata, D. leucoptera, D. pileata), but hybrids and intergrades are frequent.

Nicopsitta

(Psittacidae; syn. Psittacula † Malabar Parakeet P. columboides) Nicole Braun (fl. 2016) wife of German ornithologist Dr Michael P. Braun; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "Nicopsitta Braun, gen. nov., feminin (Nicopsitta columboides, N. calthrapae), Typusart: Palaeornis columboides Vigors, 1830.  Der Name wurde zu Ehren von Nicole Braun gewählt, der Frau von MPB." (Braun et al. 2016); "Nicopsitta Braun in Braun, Bahr and Wink, 2016, Vogelwarte, 54 (4), p. 323.  Type, by original designation, Palaeornis columboides Vigors, 1830." (JAJ 2020).

Northipsitta

(Psittacidae; syn. Polytelis Princess Parrot P. alexandrae) Alfred John North (1855-1917) Australian jeweller, oologist; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; "SUBSTITUTE-NAMES.   ...   Northipsitta, nom. nov., for Spathopterus North; not Spathoptera (Lath.) [sic], Serv. Ann. Soc. Ent., France, Vol. IV., p. 50, 1835." (Mathews 1912);  "Northipsitta Mathews, Austral Avian Record, I, p. 127.  New name for Spathopterus North, 1895, considered preoccupied by Spathoptera Latreille, 1835 (Coleoptera)." (JAJ 2021).

Notopsittacus

Gr. νοτος notos  south, southwest; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot.
• (Psittacidae; syn. Cyanoramphus Raiatea Parakeet C. ulietanus) "[Text, p. 45, line 16] Polynesian forms may represent a third subgenus (Bruce & McAllan in prep.)  ...  [separate errata sheet issued 29 May 1989]  ERRATA  ... p. 45: Delete line 16, from top of page, and replace with: "Polynesian forms represent a fourth subgenus, for which we propose the name Notopsittacus subgen. nov.  We designate as type species, Cyanoramphus ulietanus (Gmelin, 1788).  At present the subgenus also includes C. zealandicus (Latham, 1790).  Details of these two extinct species are found in Holyoak & Thibault (1984), and we will be publishing more on this group later (Bruce & McAllan in prep.)."" (McAllan & Bruce 1989); "There is simply no excuse for such sloppiness, particularly by authors who have specialized in nomenclatural minutiae.  Notopsittacus Bruce and McAllan, 1989, being a preoccupied name proposed with no diagnosis in an errata sheet, has my nomination as the worst "new" avian taxon published in the 20th century.  It is a pity that it has so much competition." (Olson 1990); "Notopsittacus McAllan and Bruce, 1989, Birds of New South Wales. A Working List, ed. 1 (1987), Errata sheet, p. 45 (not of A. Roberts, 1922).  Type, by original designation, Psittacus ulietanus Gmelin, 1788." (JAJ 2021).

Poicephalus † Brown-necked Parrot P. robustus) "The genus Poicephalus contains four well-defined groups of species   ... 1.  Bill pale above and below, wing over 7 inches in length, culmen over 1 inch in length: P. robustus and allies.   ...   The fourth group represents the typical Poicephalus   ...   the first in a new subgenus NOTOPSITTACUS, type Psittacus robustus Gmelin." (A. Roberts 1922); "Notopsittacus A. Roberts, 1922, Annals Transvaal Mus., VIII (4), p. 212.  Type, by original designation, Psittacus robustus Gmelin, 1788." (JAJ 2020) (see Micropsittacus).

Oenopsittacus

(Psittacidae; syn. Trichoglossus Pohnpei Lorikeet T. rubiginosus) Gr. Orn. 1913, p. 401 (April).  Type (by monotypy): Chalcopsitta rubiginosa Bp." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 295).

Oenositta

(Sittidae; syn. Sitta Velvet-fronted Nuthatch S. frontalis) Gr. οινος oinos  wine; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; "GENUS Oenositta nom. nov. (für Orthorhynchus Swainson, 1820, Zoological Illustrations III, Ser. I, Taf. 2, nec Cuvier, 1800, und Dendrophila Swainson, 1837 [VII], On the natural history and classification of birds, vol. II, p. 318, nec Hodgson, 1837 [IV], Madras Journal V, p. 432), Wolters, VI, 1979.   Oenositta solangiae (Delac. & Jabouille, 1930)  ...  Konspez mit Oe. frontalis?   ...   Oenositta frontalis (Swains., 1820)" (Wolters 1979) (OD per Björn Bergenholtz); "Oenositta Wolters, 1979, Die Vogelarten der Erde, (4), p. 253.  New name for “Orthorhynchus Swainson, 1820”, i.e. Orthorynchus Swainson, 1820, considered preoccupied by Orthorhynchus Cuvier, i.e. Froriep, 1806, and for Dendrophila Swainson, 1837 (not of Hodgson, 1837)." (JAJ 2022).

Opopsitta

(Psittaculidae; syn. Cyclopsitta  Double-eyed Fig Parrot C. diophthalma) Gr. οπος opos  fig-juice; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē   parrot; "3. Opopsitta diophthalma.  [Mus. Brit.] [Wallace.]   4.[Opopsitta] desmaresti.  [Mus. Brit.] [Wallace.]" (P. Sclater 1860); "Cyclopsitta, Jacq. et Pucher., Voy. Pole Sud. Zool. III, p. 107 (1853) . . . . .Typus: Psittacula diophthalma, Hombr. et Jacq.   Opopsitta, Sclat.1, P.Z.S. 1860, p. 227 . . . . .Typus: Psittacula diophthalma, Hombr. et Jacq.   ...   (1) Non sono riuscito a scoprire la ragione per cui lo Sclater abbia voluto sostituire il nome Opopsitta all' altro più antico Cyclopsitta." (Salvadori 1880); "Opopsitta Sclater, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1860, p. 227. Type, by subsequent designation, Psittacula diophthalma Hombron and Jacquinot. (Salvadori, Orn. Pap. Mol., 1, 1880, p. 149.)" (Peters, 1937, III, p. 164).  Sclater's paper gave no indication that he wished to provide a new name for these parrots, and it has been suggested that Opopsitta is merely a lapsus for Cyclopsitta (see Mathews, 1916/1917, Bds. Australia, VI, pp. 63-64) (see Cyclopsitta).

OREOPSITTACUS

(Psittaculidae; Ϯ Plum-faced Lorikeet O. arfaki) Gr. ορος oros, ορεος oreos  mountain (i.e. Arfak Mts., New Guinea); ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "89. Oreopsittacus (1) arfaki (Meyer), Verh. z.-b. Gesell. Wien, XXIV, p. 37. (1874).   Hab. in Nova Guinea (Montibus Arfakianis)  ...   (1) OREOPSITTACUS nov. gen. rectricibus quatuordecim aberrans, maxilla valde producta, ejusdemquem tomiis sinuosis." (Salvadori 1877); "Oreopsittacus Salvadori, Ann. Mus. Civ. Genova, 10, 1877, p. 37. Type, by monotypy, Trichoglossus arfaki A. B. Meyer." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 161).

ORTHOPSITTACA

(Psittacidae; Ϯ Red-bellied Macaw O. manilata) Gr. ορθος orthos  straight; ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; “Orthopsittaca gen. nov.  Type, Psittacus manilatus Boddaert (P. makawaunna Gmelin).  Differing from Ara Cuvier in relatively much smaller bill, with culmen very slightly if at all longer than outer hind toe with claw; anterior lateral outline of cere straight or very faintly concave, without convexity in front of nostril; excision of mandibular tomium deep and narrow; corrugations on palatal surface of maxillary unguis obsolete, and sides of forehead naked.    (Oρθος, straight; ψιττακη, a parrot.)” (Ridgway 1912); "Orthopsittaca Ridgway, Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 25, 1912, p. 99.  Type, by original designation and monotypy, Psittacus manilatus Boddaert." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 180).

Pallacidopsittacus

(Psittacidae; syn. Cyanoramphus Raiatea Parakeet C. ulietanus) Gr. παλλακις pallakis, παλλακιδος pallakidos  concubine; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "Unfortunately Notopsittacus Bruce and McAllan, 1989, was preoccupied by Notopsittacus Roberts, 1911.  ...  Murray Bruce and Ian McAllan kindly requested that we formally correct their oversight.  This necessitates the erection of a replacement name which we herein propose with generic standing as: Pallacidopsittacus Nom. Nov." (Wells & Wellington 1992); "Pallacidopsittacus Wells and Wellington, 1992, Sydney Basin Naturalist, 1, p. 126.  New name for Notopsittacus Bruce and McAllan, 1989, not of A. Roberts, 1911." (JAJ 2021).

PARVIPSITTA

(Psittaculidae; Little Lorikeet P. pusilla) L. parvus  little; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; "GLOSSOPSITTA.   ...   Three species are included in this genus, the type being larger than the other two. For the last two I propose the new subgeneric name PARVIPSITTA, naming Psittacus pusillus White as type.  They differ in their smaller size, their smaller and narrower bill more projecting, with longer tip and obsolete notch after tip, their proportionately shorter tail and smaller legs and feet. It is possible that internal differences may be observed, as in the case of Lathamus to be hereafter noticed.  As a small item I have noticed that the typical species is recorded as laying two eggs only, while the smaller species lay four or five eggs.  ...  I would conclude that G. pusilla was closer to Hypocharmosyna than to Glossopsitta typical." (Mathews 1916); "Parvipsitta Mathews, Birds Austr. vol. vi. pt. i. p. 43, Nov. 22nd, 1916.  Type (by original designation): Psittacus pusillus White." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 297).

Phippsittacus (See: Phippspsittacus)
Phippspsittacus

(Psittacidae; syn. Cyanoramphus Red-fronted Parakeet C. novaezelandiae cookii) Graeme Russell Phipps (1946-2015) Australian aviculturalist, conservationist; Gr. ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "The genus Cyanoramphus can be interpreted, on the basis of known distribution and other factors, as a relict group which has been most successful in New Zealand.  ...  The very endangered Norfolk Island population, cookii G. R. Gray, 1859, usually included with the Red-front, is a much larger, darker green form with a different bill morphology (Phipps 1981: pers. comm.).  It represents part of an earlier wave of the genus, also represented today by the Antipodes Island Parakeet C. unicolor (Lear, 1831).  The latter has been separated in the genus Bulleria Iredale & Mathews, 1926, which may also include C. cookii.  Our own investigations (Bruce & McAllan unpubl.), however, suggests that Bulleria is subgenerically separable for C. unicolor, while C. cookii, based on the characters noted above, represents a further subgenus, hitherto without a name, for which we propose Phippspsittacus subgen. nov.  We urge that its conservation be a high priority — it cannot be dismissed as 'just another subspecies'.  We name this subgenus in recognition of the work of G. R. Phipps on the group and particularly C. cookii." (McAllan & Bruce 1989); "Phippspsittacus McAllan and Bruce, 1989, Birds of New South Wales. A Working List, ed. 1, p. 45.  Type, by monotypy, Platycercus cookii G. Gray, 1859." (JAJ 2021).
Var. Phippsittacus.

Var. Pionopsittacus.
Synon. Psittacula.

pityopsittacus (See: pytyopsittacus)
pytyopsittacus

Gr.

Poecilositta

(Sittidae; synSitta  Blue Nuthatch S. azurea) Portmanteau of genera Poecile Kaup, 1829, tit, and Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; "Cyanosittinae.  IV. Poecilositta gen. nov.   1. azurea (Less.) 1830.  ...  Gen. Poecilositta gen. nov. (monotype: Sitta azurea Less.)" (Buturlin 1916) (OD per Laurent Raty); "Poecilositta Buturlin, 1916, Travaux Soc. Imp. Nat. Petrograd, XLIV (2), p. 149.  Type, by original designation, Sitta azurea Lesson, 1830." (JAJ 2021) (see Poliositta).

Poliopsitta

(Psittacidae; syn. Agapornis Grey-headed Lovebird A. canus) Gr. πολιος polios  grey; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittakē  parrot; "A. Psittaceæ.   ...   51. POLIOPSITTA, Bp.  —  225. Var. Poliopsittacus.

Poliositta

(Sittidae; syn. Sitta † Blue Nuthatch S. azurea expectata)  Gr. πολιος polios  grey; genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; "156.  Poliositta azurea subsp. expectata (Hartert)." (Robinson & Kloss 1918); "Poliositta Robinson and Kloss, 1918, Journ. Federated Malay States Mus., VIII, p. 228.  Type, by monotypy, Poliositta azurea expectata (Hartert), i.e. Callisitta azurea expectata Hartert, 1914." (JAJ 2021).  The sole spelling in the original paper, and also used elsewhere, thus doubtfully a lapsus for Poecilositta, as intimated by Richmond, 1927, Proc. U. S. Nat. Mus., 70, no. 2664, art. 15, p. 29.

pseudopityopsittacus

Gr. ψευδος pseudos  false; specific name Loxia pytyopsittacus Borkhausen, 1793; "2) Der ächte Kiefernkreuzschnabel.  Crucirostra pityopsittacus, Brm.  (Loxia pityopsittacus, Bechst.)   ...   5) Der unächte Kiefernkreuzschnabel.  Crucirostra pseudo-pityopsittacus, Brm.  Abbild. (C. Brehm 1853) (syn. Loxia curvirostra).

Pseudopsittacus

(Psittacidae; syn. Geoffroyus Red-cheeked Parrot G. geoffroyi maclennani) Gr. ψευδος pseudos  false, another; ψυττακος psittakos  parrot; "When proceeding up the river in search of a suitable camping-place, one of the first objects which attracted his attention was a strange Parrakeet, which flew from the scrub lining the banks of the river.  Its call and flight were unfamiliar to him.  I have now received from him a male and female of what seems to me not only a new species, but a new genus. It may be placed in the family Cyclopsittacidæ.  Although partaking in general of the characters of this family, and of the two genera, Neopsittacus and Cyclopsittacus, of which it is composed, it differs sufficiently, in my opinion, from both to warrant it being placed in a distinct genus, for which I propose the name Pseudopsittacus, the distinctive characters being:—Bill–upper mandible crimson, merging into orange-yellow at the tip; lower mandible dark brown, gonys moderately broad and flattened, with one distinct central ridge; nostrils bare.  In the female the bill is wholly olive-brown.  Tail short; rectrices twelve, and of equal length.   Pseudopsittacus maclennani, gen. and sp. nov." (MacGillivray 1913); "Pseudopsittacus Macgillivray, Emu, 13, 1913, p. 105. Type, by monotypy, Pseudopsittacus maclennani Macgillivray." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 233).

PSITTACARA

(Psittacidae; White-eyed Parakeet P. leucophthalmus) Portmanteau of genera Psittacula Cuvier, 1800, parakeet, and Ara de Lacépède, 1799, macaw; "These birds, although their cheeks are covered with feathers and they are thus brought within the circle of the Parrakeets, have yet the bill of the Maccaws  ... From their osculant situation between the two groups, thus strikingly apparent, the species that exhibit these characters have received the familiar name of Parrakeet-Maccaws in our language, and of Perruche-Aras among the French Ornithologists. Like the true Maccaws they are exclusively natives of the New World. Two species, lately added to our collections in this country, and which appear to me to be new to science, afford me an opportunity of characterizing this interesting group, which from its intermediate station between the two subfamilies, and with a reference to the trivial name already bestowed upon it, I shall denominate PSITTACARA.  ...  The Psittacus Guianensis of Linnaeus, the Perruche-Ara Pavouane of M. Le Vaillant [Pl. 14. 15] may be selected as the type of this genus.  To this may be added the following species, which accurately accord with the general characters of the genus, but in which the naked space round the eye is more contracted;  P. squamosus, Lath.   …   P. versicolor, Lath.   …   P. vittatus, Shaw.  …  together with the P. auricapillus and P. leucotis of M. Lichtenstein.  I have lately received the following birds from Brazil, which are also referable to the group, although, from the difference in the extent of the naked space round the eye of each, they appear to occupy different stations in it.   FRONTATUS.   …   LICHTENSTEINII." (Vigors 1825); "Psittacara Vigors, 1825, The Zoological Journal, II (VII), Art. XLIV, p. 388.  Type, by original designation, Psittacus guianensis Linnaeus, i.e. Psittacus gujanensis Gmelin, 1788 = Psittacus leucophthalmus Statius Müller, 1776." (JAJ 2022).

...   PSITACELLA [sic] MODESTA, n. sp. — La deuxième espèce de ce petit sous-genre" (Schlegel 1871); "Psittacella Schlegel, Nederl. Tijdschr. (Cuvier 1800); "As an item of importance to extra-limital workers, I might notice that Opinion No. 39 legitimatises Cuvier's Psittacula, and this is quite different to the genus now so called and is antecedent to Palæornis. Thus Psittacula Cuvier was provided for Les Perruches, and as examples in the Leçons are cited P. alexandri and P. rufirostris. These, as understood by Cuvier, were congeneric and are typical Palæornis of Vigors. I have already indicated that Conurus Kuhl was typified by Lesson by Palæornis and should displace it. At the present time Psittacula Cuvier will replace Conurus, while Palæornis must altogether disappear.  Apparently for the South American Parrots now termed Psittacula, Boie's genus name Forpus will come into use" (Mathews 1917); "Psittacula Cuvier, Leçons d'Anat. Sittaparus (See: SITTIPARUS)
SITTIPARUS

(Paridae; Varied Tit S. varius) Portmanteau of genera Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch, and Parus Linnaeus, 1758, tit; "{Front blanchâtre. Tête non huppée. . . . .5. Sittiparus Selys (Asie orientale).  ...  Sous-genre V. SITTIPARUS Selys, 1884.  ... Soc. Zool. France, 9, pp. 43, 58..  Type, by original designation, Parus varius Temminck and Schlegel." (Snow in Peters, 1967, XII, p. 71).
Var. Sittaparus.
Synon. Penthornis.
● (Pellorneidae; syn. Schoeniparus  Yellow-throated Fulvetta S. cinereus). "Genus SITTIPARUS, n. gen.  The genus for which I propose the name of Sittiparus (with S. cinereus as the type) contains two birds which are quite different from Schœniparus on the one hand, and from Proparus and Lioparus on the other.  In 1844 (J.A.S.B. xiii, p. 939) Hodgson proposed the name of Certhiparus for S. castaneiceps.  This name had, however, been given by Lafresnaye two years previously to some birds from New Zealand, and Hodgson's name therefore cannot be retained.  Sittiparus is one of the genera of Timeliine birds with a Tit-like bill.  It differs from Schœniparus in having the tail very much shorter than the wing, and from Proparus and Lioparus in having no hairs overhanging the nostrils.  ...  181. Sittiparus cinereus. The Dusky-green Tit-Babbler.  ...  The Dusky-green Hill-Tit, Jerd.  ...  182. Sittiparus castaneiceps. The Chestnut-headed Tit-Babbler..  ...  The Chestnut-headed Hill-Tit, Jerd." (Oates 1889); "Sittiparus Oates, 1889, Fauna Brit. India, Birds, 1, pp. 131 (in key), 171.  Type, by original designation, Minla cinerea Blyth.  Not Sittiparus Selys-Longchamps, 1884, Aves." (Deignan in Peters, 1964, X, p. 397) (see Proparoides).

SITTASOMUS

(Furnariidae;  Olivaceous Woodcreeper S. griseicapillus sylviellus) Genus Sitta Linnaeus, 1758, nuthatch; Gr. σωμα sōma, σωματος sōmatos  body; "SITTASOMUS.   ...   Bill small, slender, straight, slightly notched; culmen rather curved.  Wings moderate.  Tail lengthened, rigid.   Type. Dend. sylviellus. Temm., Pl. col. 72. f. 1?   By this form the genera Oxyurus and Xenops appear to be brought together. It possesses the rigid scansorial tail of Dendrocolaptes, and the more feeble bill of Xenops." (Swainson 1827); "Sittasomus SWAINSON, Zool. Journ., 3, p. 355, 1827—type by orig. desig. Dendrocolaptes sylviellus TEMMINCK." (Hellmayr, 1925, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. IV, p. 354).

Suavipsitta

(Psittacidae; syn. Cyclopsitta  Dusky-cheeked Fig Parrot O. melanogenia suavissima) L. suavis  pleasant; Mod. L. psitta  parrot; "CORRECTION.  IN this volume, Part I, p. 65, published November, 1916, I introduced the new generic name Nannopsittacus for Cyclopsitta suavissima Sclater.  I find that Ridgway, in the Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, Vol. 25, p. 100, May 4, 1912, had proposed Nannopsittaca for a different group, thus preoccupying my name.  I therefore remedy this item by the new name Suavipsitta, with the same species as type." (Mathews 1917); "Suavipsitta Mathews, 1917, Birds of Australia, VI (6), p. xix.  New name for Nannopsittacus Mathews, 1916, considered preoccupied by Nannopsittaca Ridgway, 1912." (JAJ 2021).
