(urogallus)  ...  **) Nomen Tetrao s. potius Tetarus (τεταρος) primum in scriptis Regis Ptolomæi Evergetis allatum est, qua de re Athenæus memorat (Lib. XIV, 654). Avis erat phasianina, colore splendidissima, apud Nomadas Asiæ vulgaris et ex Media Alexandriam allata, ubi in arce regia, ut ornamentum alebatur; verisimiliter Phasianus pictus L.  -  Deinde vero Tetraones Linneani, urogallus et tetrix, a Plinio "Tetraones" apellantur (X, 29)" (Sundevall 1873); "91. Bonasia, T. rufus, T. Perdix, T. virginianus, T. marilandicus, T. orientalis, T. Coturnix).

(Phasianidae; Ϯ Himalayan Snowcock T. himalayensis) Compound of genera Tetrao Linnaeus, 1758, grouse, and Gallus Brisson, 1760, fowl; "NIGELL'S PHEASANT-GROUSE. TETRAOGALLUS NIGELLII Gray [pl. 46]" (J. Gray 1832); "Tetraogallus J. E. Gray, in Hardwicke's Ill. Ind. Zool., 2, pt. 11, 1832, pl. 46. Type, by monotypy, Tetraogallus nigellii J. E. Genus Tetrao Linnaeus, 1758, grouse (but here used in the sense of partridge Alectoris) (cf. Gr. τετραξ tetrax, τετραγος tetragos  gamebird); -οιδης -oidēs  resembling; "180. COLUMBA TETRAOIDES.   DIAGN. Caput et collum nigra, nigredine albo margine cincta, ut in Tetraone Rufo.  In V. C.  Statura Tetraonis eiusdem." (Scopoli 1769) (syn. Starnoenas cyanocephala).

Tetraoperdix

(Phasianidae; syn. Lerwa Snow Partridge L. lerwa) Compound of genera Tetrao Linnaeus, 1758, grouse, and Perdix Brisson, 1760, partridge; "Genus— LERWA nobis.  ...  The lateral small scales of the fore toes are free, giving the pectinated appearance of the feet in the grouse, to which genus our bird has numberless affinities, external and internal; so much so that Tetraoperdix might very well designate the new genus I have proposed for it, if that word were not somewhat unmanageable, in comparison of our Lerwa, which I have therefore preferred, native thought it be.  ...  These birds have the habits and manners of Tetrao rather than of Perdix.  ...  They are splendid game, with a vigorous flight, shy, and in size and strength equal to a grouse.  Their flesh is white, succulent, and possessed of a very high flavour." TETRAOPHASIS

(Phasianidae; Ϯ Chestnut-throated Monal Partridge / Verreaux's Monal Partridge T. obscurus) Genus Tetraogallus J. Gray, 1832, snowcock; Mod. L. phasis  pheasant  < Med. L. phasis avis  pheasant; "TETRAOPHASIS OBSCURUS.  MOU-PIN PHEASANT.   LOPHOPHORUS OBSCURUS, J. Verr. Archiv. du Mus. Paris (1870), p. 35.  HAB. Thibet (DAVID).  THIS curious bird is one of the late discoveries of the French missionary Père David, and was described by M. Jules Verreaux, in the Archives of the Museum of Paris, as Lophophorus obscurus. It cannot be considered to belong to that genus, although in some characters it resembles its members, but represents an entirely new genus, and apparently connects a portion of the Phasianidæ with the Snow-Partridges or Tetraogalli. Nothing is known about its economy or habits." (Elliot 1871); "Tetraophasis Elliot, Monogr. Phasian., 1, 1871, p. xix, pl. [21] and text. Type, by original designation and monotypy, Lophophorus obscurus J. Verreaux." (Peters, 1934, II, p. 62). This small group is confined to the mountains of central and south-western China.
