Gr. τμητος tmētos  cut  < τεμνω temnō  to cut; κερας keras, κερως kerōs  horn.

Less. 1831.  Tragopan (Moehr) Gray 1841).  Typus: T. abyssinicus (Gm.).  Wir setzen den Namen: Tmetoceros (τμητος, verschnitten, abgeschnitten; κερας, Horn) an die Stelle von Bucorvus (!) Less."
