TURTUR

(Columbidae; Blue-spotted Wood Dove T. afer) L. turtur, turturis  turtle dove; "160. Tourterelle du Senegal. BUFF. VI. p. 394.  BRISS. Ornith. I. p. 122. pl. X. f. 1.  Turtur afra, LINN. 104. 34." (Peters, 1937, III, p. 112); “Note that Turtur Boddaert is now under threat due to Turtur Garsault, 1764, Traité des plantes et animaux d’usage en medecine, V, pl. 685: VI, p. 426, which would be a senior homonym if Garsault 1764 is accepted as binominal, as some would like it to be.” (Laurent Raty in litt. 2023).
Synon. Calopelia, Chalcopelia, Chalcoptera.
● (Columbidae; syn. Streptopelia  "Turtle Dove S. risorius" (= domesticated Eurasian Collared Dove S. decaocto or African Collared Dove S. roseogrisea)) "Genus TURTUR.   THE birds belonging to this group are distinguished by their bill, which is slenderer in its proportions than that of the Pigeons.  ...  The Turtles are inferior in size to the Pigeons, which they closely resemble in their habits.  They feed upon the ground, but roost and breed in the woods.  As an example of the genus, we present our readers with a figure of the well known  COLLARED TURTLE Turtur risorius  ...  FROM a very remote period this species appears to have been domesticated, or rather kept in that state of captivity in which it is retained at the present day; for there is every reason to suppose that the turtle dove adverted to in Holy Writ may be referred to the same bird, as it is still abundant in Egypt and other parts of the East, where it is fostered and cultivated with care   ...   Besides the wild turtle known to us as a regular summer visitant in the southern districts of England, the Columba maculicollis and the Columba aurita of Temminck, and several others belong to the group, of which the present species may be considered a type." (Selby 1835); “Turtur Selby, 1835, The Naturalist’s Library. IX. Ornithology. Pigeons., p. 169.  Type, by original designation, Turtur risorius Selby, 1835 = Columba risoria Linnaeus, 1758.” (JAJ 2023).
Var. Turtus.

Turturoena

(Columbidae; syn. Columba Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon C. delegorguei) L. turtur, turturis  turtle dove; Gr. Turturaena, Bp. (Turtur, part. Gr.)  Remiges 1a et 2a omnium longissimae: rectrices latissimae, rotundatae.  Magnitudo TURTURINARUM.    Afr.  2.   1. COLUMBA delegorguii, Delegorgue.   ...   2. COLUMBA malherbii, Verr." (Bonaparte 1855); "Turturœna Bonaparte, Comptes Rend. xxxix, p. 1104, 1854.  Type by subsequent designation of Gray (Cat. Gen. Subgen. Bds. p. 150, 1855), Columba malherbi Verr." (W. Sclater, 1924, Syst. Av. Aethiop., I, p. 163).
