zanda

Etymology undiscovered; the author was never forthcoming; Gregory Mathews’s father, Robert Hamilton Mathews (1841-1918), was a surveyor and anthropologist who published numerous papers on Austraboriginal customs and languages, including lists of bird names.  Doubtless his son revelled in confounding the classicists by tilling this rich field.  However, many of Gregory’s coinages appear nonsense-names, poorly conceived anagrams, portmanteaux and blends, or flights of fancy - or perhaps he was overly influenced by the Comte de Buffon and other French authors!  His papers will reward further study (see Territornis).
● "Pagoa zanda for the bird figured and described in my "Birds of Australia," vol. iii., p. 100, pl. 136.  Type—Point Torment, North-West Australia." (Mathews 1916, Emu, 16, 35) (syn. Charadrius leschenaultii).
● "p. 136. NORTHIELLA HÆMATOGASTER ZANDA.  Red-vented Parrot.  Differs from N. h. hæmatogaster Gould in having a splash of red on the wing-coverts, and the vent and under-tail coverts deep red.  Type: Moree, New South Wales, October, 1907." ● "p. 280. PTILOTULA FLAVESCENS ZANDA. Gulf Yellow-tinted Honey-eater.  Differs from P. f. melvillensis Mathews in being less striped on the chest, and lighter in colour and build.  Type, Normanton, Gulf of Carpentaria.  Collected by Mr. R. Kemp, 9-10-13." (Mathews 1913, Austral Avian Record, 2, 77) (syn. Ptilotula flavescens).

ZANDA

(Cacatuidae; Baudin's Black Cockatoo Z. baudinii) Etymology undiscovered; perhaps an eponym or one of Mathews's nonsense-names; his manuscripts, referred to by Richmond 1917, indicate that Zanda is an Austraboriginal name (cf. Old Persian zanda  beautiful girl) (see zanda); "ZANDA, gen. nov.  Differs from Calyptorhynchus in its very flat, narrow bill and different wing-formuli—3rd, 4th, and 5th longest and subequal, 1st shorter than 5th.   Type, Calyptorhynchus baudini tenuirostris Mathews." (Mathews 1913); "Zanda Mathews, Austral Av. Rec. vol. i. p. 196, March 20th, 1913.  Type (by original designation): Calyptorhynchus baudinii tenuirostris Mathews." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 311); "5. Zanda baudinii  ...  Confusion over bill size of specimen used in original description led to proposal of race tenuirostris, but this name shown to be synonymous with baudinii." (del Hoyo and Collar, 2014, HBW Illustrated Checklist, 1, Non-passerines, p. 700).
